It depends. In some classes you'll have several books and each of them will cost less than $15, and in other classes you'll have one book and it will cost you $150. Books that are designed to be textbooks tend to cost more than books that are sold to non-students too, because students are so likely to buy and sell used books that a publisher needs to recover all the costs of publishing a book and try to make some profit in the first couple of years after a textbook comes out and because some books have such a small readership (and will mostly be bought by libraries anyway) that everyone who buys a book has to pay a significant chunk of the fixed costs of publishing, but readers will buy new copies of general interest books for years and years.



If you go to a campus bookstore, they'll often have a page for ordering textbooks. You can choose a semester, and then a department, and then a class in that department, and the site will tell you what books are required and/or recommended, and how much they'll cost new or used (assuming that they are in stock. Most books will not be in stock at this time of year, but of course you aren't going there to buy books right now anyway). If you want to be really thorough you can come up with an imaginary class schedule for a semester at a college or university you might like to attend and then pick those classes at that school's campus bookstore, but you can just play around at a campus bookstore site, too.
