Here are some that have been on my reading lists for uni: Picture of Dorian Grey (1st and 4th year) The Surrounded (3rd), Heart of Darkness (1st) Also, you could pick something from William Faulkner, Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, Dickens, or Silvia Plath.. In contemporary lit, Cormack McCarthy has been getting on college reading lists lately. Hope this helps!

BTW, Mrs. Dalloway is like watching paint dry. What are some good books with a college reading level?
Hard to say if these can be classed as college level, but they do contain some social and gritty adult themes.....Blades and Dangerous Days, both by J. William Turner. Realistic fiction in the first-person about Australian teens in several tense, dramatic, life and death situations set in many parts of Australia, plus California and England. The plot of each novel unfolds as a series of four-books-in-one. These sub-books are also available singly on Kindle under their individual names, Street Kid, High Country, California Dreaming, Aftermath, Storm Ridge, Paddle Hard, Outback Heroes, and Enemies Within.

Also, try the fiction novel Fat To Fast by same author. It is the journal of a clinical psychologist treating an obese teen boy.
