Should I buy my books for college now or should I wait to see if I will use them?

I am about to start college the 23rd ( first year) and I am looking at the books I am required to have. From what people have been telling me, sometimes a class that required a book ends up not really using it. So I have had people suggest that I wait until I get my syllabus for each class to see if indeed I will need the book. What do you suggest I do?

You shouldn't buy your books too early because if you drop the class or if your professor doesn't end up using the book, you want to be able to return the books and get your money back. You can save a lot of money by buying them online, but you'll only have between 7 and 30 days to return a book, depending on the site. So just make sure you time it right and you check out the return policies.



What I usually do is wait until classes start and I know which classes I'm taking. Then I buy my books online. While I'm waiting for my books, I buy them from the bookstore as well. When I get my books in the mail, I return the ones I got from the bookstore (just make sure to note when the last day to return books is! It's usually only about 2 weeks from the time classes start).

I would hold off on it. #1: sometimes a book is listed but the prof doesn't really use it. #2: sometimes your school library has the textbook on reserve, meaning you can check it out for free for a couple hours at a time. #3: If the book is not on reserve and your prof actively uses it, then buy it. You'll know by the end of week 1 and the books will still be there. I suggest you buy your books ASAP. Why? Because guess what? There isn't an infinite stock of books. If you're not gonna need the book, there is a return policy and you can get your money back. But if you wait until the last minute, need your book, and cannot find one, then you're screwed aren't you?
