I only have 4 classes this semester. I'm assuming the $1000 is for one whole year so I'm expected to pay an average of $500 on books. However, many places sell them used online for cheaper so it seems that I won't be spending that much.
Thoughts?
Suggestions?Do students REALLY spend an average of $1000 on college books?
I usually spent around $200 on my books per semester even though I took a lot of science and math classes (and those books cost a lot). The reason I could get them so cheap is because I really did everything possible to not spend more money than I had to. When I was in college I spent between $800 and $2000 per semester on books, those were mostly science and technology subjects which tend to have the most expensive books. It's depends on the school and the instructor alot of instructors now will try and midigate the cost by using more online resources and other free matterials but subjects like physics, math and other sciences ussually still invovle expensive textbooks. I think the most I ever paid for a single book was a first year physics book at $500 and the cheapest being an eglish book at $45. So it can vary greatly depending on the type of courses you are taking.Do students REALLY spend an average of $1000 on college books?
Its alot more than that
Depending on what type of classes will determine the price..
Science books are the most expensive. So if you are taking alot of science classes, you are gonna be dishing out serious money...
as for history books, i would recondmend you get them online. or ask your professor if IF YOU ABSOLUTLY HAVE TO GET THE BOOK...because some teachers test you on their lecture notes.
Every year i spend around $500 dollars on books, I get majority of mine off line (www.allbookstores.com), but some books are custom edition to the college you go to, and you are stuck having to buy the bookDo students REALLY spend an average of $1000 on college books?
It really depends on what kinds of classes you are taking. If you take literature classes, for instance, you would be buying mostly paperback novels or photocopied readers, which are quite cheap. Science textbooks are generally more expensive, more like $200 each. Plus, in science fields that advance quite often, such as organic chemistry or genetics, they come out with a new version every couple of years, so you can't find any used ones.
It depends on your major.. science, math, and engineering books can be ridiculously expensive. Online usually helps, just becareful with shipping cost %26amp; time. Also, occasionally the instructor will allow an older edition... you just need to ask them. Different instructors sometimes use different books for the same course, so you might save money by investigating book choice prior to registration. It just takes a quick email to ask for a syllabus. Regardless though, $1000 sounds like plenty of money.
It's not unusual for a student to spend $1000 on books for a year. 4 classes a semester, that would be $250 a book. High for a used copy, but on point for a brand new edition (i.e. no used copies available). You should definitely be looking for used copies as you will save yourself lots of money. Also consider buying international editions.
There is also the cost of online supplements. For my science classes, we have online homework, which requires a paid subscription. At $50 a subscription, the price quickly adds up.
