From where college professor choose the books they will use to teach a class?

I'm a history major and want to get good books to read about different topics in history. Now, I know that college professors usually use very good books to teach a class, but I don't know where they go to find these books. From where college professor choose the books they will use to teach a class?
If the books aren't written by someone in the history department, the books your professors use are given to them by vendors. Meaning, publishing companies send their texts to schools to have professors preview and review the books. Then the school can setup an account with the vendor and get special discounts. That definitely does not help your case.

To find your own resources you can either perform an internet search or go to your college library and peruse the history section. The books at the library are picked by professors, more often than not, so they are the resources your professors feel comfortable with you referencing.

If you do an internet search, I did a quick search in Bing for "history syllabus" and got a couple links to syllabi. Remember your syllabus lists the required texts for the class. So look for a bunch of different history classes to find a bunch of different syllabi, and therefore you can find a bunch of different books.

Good luck. From where college professor choose the books they will use to teach a class?
Books that are used by professor come from many sources ...

Some are written by the professor, some are written by a colleague, some were written by a student who has received hs/her doctorate, some were edited by the professor or a close acquaintance, some are referenced in professional journals and looked interesting, some are offered by major publishing houses for review, etc.

There are many sources for the textbooks used by professors and they are always changing as new information is made available.

Hope this helps clear the air more than it muddies the waters ...From where college professor choose the books they will use to teach a class?
Most professors will have a big collection of possible books to use - ones they used themselves in school, ones they've bought over the years for their research, ones that were given to them by book dealers hoping they'd decide to use it for a class and order a lot of them. If you're looking for some good books on various topics, ask your professors for some recommendations - I'm sure they'll be happy to give you some.
If your professor doesn't know, than you always can contact the dean of the department!
