How much do books cost per semester in college?

I'm trying to see how much I am going to have to save up this summer, and also plan ahead as to how much I'll need to work in college.

I'm going to UGA in the fall, if anyone is from there that could let me know.

Also, any tips on how I can save on books? How much do books cost per semester in college?
an arm + a leg
Seriously, at a community college, one semester my books cost more than the tuition for the 3 credit hour class I bought them for. I generally planned for $200-300 as a liberal arts English major. I also took out stafford loans and budgeted books into what I borrowed.

Get the booklist as soom as you can. When you can, y used books, and check bulletin boards (online and in buildings on campus) for other students getting rid of the books you need to buy - make sure it's the edition required for the class. They sometimes get updated between semesters, so last semester's book by the same title can be different. Used books can be 25%-50% cheaper than new books, especially in math and sciences classes, which can get uber pricey. But sometimes you'll have to get new.

Sell the books at the end of the semester that you won't need in the future. Youll probably get better deals selling and buying from other students than campus or indie bookstores. You'll at least make laundry money for a month or fun money for the weekend! How much do books cost per semester in college?
books have all different prices. however, new costs more than used saves. i'd try 2 get a used 1 B4 buying new. if no used 1's r there 4 what u need then u'll have 2 get new. 1 time there was a book drop @ my school %26amp; i saw a book that i could L8r use 4 reference. u may check 2 c if u can have 1 of those if yer allowed. usually ppl drop books they no longer need %26amp; they may B fair game 2 some 1 else in need. i'd check around in yer travels 2 c if there may B a book drop somewhere, which would save u $$$ b/c books r really expensive. this is also y it's so important 2 keep ALL books in excellent cond, ESPECIALLY if u must buy new, so u'll get as much of yer $$$ back as u possible.

if u can get financial aid 2 buy them 4 u, i'd do it. remember tho, if u don't get yer grant fast enough u'll get stuck w/ a cash register surprise; i did. i had 2 temporarily attend class w/o a book til i was able 2 buy what i needed. i was lucky 2 have another student share a book w/ me, which was a real blessing. i can now pay it 4-ward 2 some 1 else who may 1 day need my help.
My books were about $700 for the first semester. These books are so expensive. As soon as you professors put up the list of books you need, then search on barns and noble or amazon or any website that sells used books. Used books are so much cheaper. Make sure you know what your professor wants because I bought books before classes started and we didnt use half of them for one particular class. Good Luck! How much do books cost per semester in college?
Bring a pen and paper to the book store, copy the book info and tell the store clerk to kiss your ***, then go online and order them (www.half.com). When the semester is over, sell them to the book store that you weren't going to buy the books from. A lot of times you will make more money than you spent.

Good Luck!!
generally the cost of books vary per classes. the less classes you take the less amount of books you need. i took 4 classes last semester and all my books were close to 400. its cheaper to look around online for deals then to buy them in the bookstore. also some past students put up fliers of books they r selling
I spent about $300 - $400 per Semester on books new from the campus bookstore. You could go to a local, used bookstore and get the books cheaper from a previous student - but they might have notes inside. Try craigslist.
could be a few hundred dollars..i have my issues with that..but each book can start at 100 bucks..any subject.. math ones are more
first semester cost me $800

second semester cost me $300

depends on the courses your taking and if your buying new or used books
Last semester it cost me $1,200. Most of the expenses came from a computer programming class which I later withdrew
It really depends on the courses you are taking. On average, it's probably about $200-300. Could be more or could be less.
If it is new it will be more

If used cost ,much less
He's lying it's about 1 arm and 2 legs.
some books are $150 and up so I say the total would be $500
for a full time student, i'd say about $500 per semester. buy used, use ebay if you can find em

When am i supposed to buy books for college?

I am starting next week and havent bought my books yet. Would i get in trouble if i went in the first day without them? When am i supposed to buy books for college?
I'm a senior in college and i have learned that if the professor has not made some kind of announcement through the schools website or through email then books are not necessary to get by the first day of class. i usually get my books within the first week though. the longer you put off buying your books the further behind you get in the readings that are required and those readings can really pile up against you.

i guess from a Prof's standpoint it would be ideal to get your books before class, but from a student's stand point you can get it whenever you want. The Prof is not going to call you out in front of the entire class demanding reason for why you don't have your book.

some Prof's want you to bring your book to class everyday. this is when they might get a little mad if you don't have your books yet. other times they don't need you to bring your book to class, but they would like to discuss the reading assigned for that day and a lot of classes require participation in the discussion.

As long as you eventually get your books, everthing should be fine
You will be okay for the 1st class but will be in trouble from the 2nd class onwards. So go ahead you probably have less than a week to get you books.

Look up used book stores around your school/college. They usually have good deals. When am i supposed to buy books for college?
It has been a few year but I do not think I ever used my book the first day. I always had it with me though. I recomend getting them now. The teacher may say... Open your book and you would feel pretty unhappy if you didn't have it. Good luck school is FUn
No most people won't have them. I ordered my books online during the first week of classes so I'd have them during the 2nd and 3rd weeks. When am i supposed to buy books for college?
no, but ur going to miss out on the readings 4 the first day

Listamillion.com classified ads is a wonderful site for buying and selling cheap items such as college textbooks. I was in need of cheap textbooks and while I was doing a search, I ran across listamillion.com. I was definitely impressed with the selection of items on the site. There are so many people that are selling their stuff on sites like these for cheaper prices because they just want to get rid of these textbooks and get some money to buy more books for the next semester. College students are in need of money and textbook flipping is a main source of income. I would highly recommend you guys to check out listamillion classified ads. Anyhow... my niece has used Half.com for text books for several years with good results. I think they're associated with Amazon.

When is the right time to start to buy text books for college?

Im starting school the 30th of august and i want to know when should u start shopping for texts booksWhen is the right time to start to buy text books for college?
You shouldn't buy your books too early because if you drop the class, you want to be able to return the books and get your money back. You can save a lot of money by buying them online, but you'll only have between 7 and 30 days to return a book, depending on the site. So just make sure you time it right and you check out the return policies.

What I usually do is wait until classes start and I know which classes I'm taking. Then I buy my books online. While I'm waiting for my books, I buy them from the bookstore as well. When I get my books in the mail, I return the ones I got from the bookstore (just make sure to note when the last day to return books is! It's usually only about 2 weeks from the time classes start).

There are a lot of different places to buy books online. You can check out this article to find out which site would be best for you: http://makecollegereality.com/succeed/ge鈥?/a>

When is the right time to start to buy text books for college?
The best time is a few days after the start of text book selling date. If you go too early, they might not have all of the books you need in. I went yesterday to get mine and only got my math text book. The sociology textbook for my Principles of Sociology section isn't in yet.
Start looking around for textbooks now, you can probably find good deals if you take some time looking at eBay, half.com, amazon.com and other sources rather than waiting last minute and buying from the college bookstore. When is the right time to start to buy text books for college?
You should start as soon as you know the books. HOWEVER, if there is more than one prof teaching the subject, the books may not be the same. Be sure you know exactly what your prof wants and be sure you are not changing your schedule..
Start looking around as soon as you have a list of what books you need. Used books are a good deal if you can find them in good shape and if you don't mind the highlighting done by someone else.
As soon as you know what books you need, start looking around. Don't forget to check out cheap text book options in your area. You can save a ton that way.

What are some tips on reading college level books in a certain amount of time??? Please help!?

    Hey there.

Well, I am taking an AP World History course here at my high school. I have to read 30 pages by tomorrow. It doesn't sound like much, but the book is HUGE, and the letters are tiny.

Any way to speed things up? I've heard of skimming through, but I don't know how to do that!

Please, time is of the essence! What are some tips on reading college level books in a certain amount of time??? Please help!?
I always speed read things like that---- It takes a little practice though

Try skimming a page really quick---and see if you can articulate any facts you just read-----if not go back in and find them---and keep doing that.

Amazon and eBay (trusted sellers though) have been the best resources for me through undergrad and especially grad.

Amazon sells below the price of most college book stores and have other trusted sellers on there who offer the same books for even less.

Just allow yourself enough time to get the books in the mail. I would order books 3 weeks before the semesters starts.Where to buy college books online?

What are some good books to read about starting college?

I am looking forward to starting college in the fall. In the meantime, I want to enjoy my summer and read books in my free time. Are there any books out there about starting college that would be fun to read? Thanks! What are some good books to read about starting college?
Both of these books are nonfiction but very interesting. Freshman Year by Rebekah Nathan is about a woman who goes back to school to see how our generation differs from hers. Pretty funny. Admission by Jean Hanff Korelitz reveals the world of the admission board of an Ivy League school. Very enlightening.

Well, not long ago Time magazine published an article where they interviewed 125 authors and asked them what the best novel in the world was and produced a list, so I would say read one of these:

    1.Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

    2.Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

3.War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

    4.Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

5.The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

    6.Hamlet by William Shakespeare

7.The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald

8.In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust

9.The Stories of Anton Chekhov by Anton Chekhov

    10.Middlemarch by George Eliot

Right now I'm reading Anna Karenina and it is really good so far.
I think the big fat books are good-The ones you avoided when you were younger thinking you won't understand anything

Hey, great question. Don't listen to people like Hung %26amp; Linda though - it's obviously too much for their minds to grasp that some people actually enjoy literature of it's own accord, and not because they're trying to become "a millionaire"~

I really enjoyed The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, and the person who suggested 10 books above had some really great suggestions. :)

Is there much difference when college text books come out with new editions?

I'm taking a political science class and the book that is required is $120 dollars at the school bookstore I found a girl who is selling the same book for 20 dollars. The book store's book is the 10th edition and the used book that I want to buy is 8th edition would their be much of a difference in the material text?Is there much difference when college text books come out with new editions?
There could be a great difference. As new editions come out, certain things will be added or changed inside the book. For example, I'm taking Biological Anthropology right now in university, and my professor said that Chapter 13 will be vastly different in the older versions of the text, because obviously as scientists discover new information they must include it in the new editions. (You could always inquire from your prof. or T.A.)Is there much difference when college text books come out with new editions?
There might be new things added to it, topics may be reorganized. Bring her to the bookstore with you so you can compare the book she's selling to the one at the bookstore just to be sure that not much has changed.

Usually the changes are in the homework questions at the end of each chapter. There's a pretty big difference between 8th and 10th, though -- I wouldn't risk it, it has updates from the 2006 elections. Look for it on Amazon or TextbooksRus or other similar websites -- even eBay -- you'll be able to find it cheaper than in the school bookstore. I saw one new listing for around $70, including shipping.
It can be extremely varied, especially in a course like political science. I know it's painful, but it's probably better to by the book from the bookstore. If she's selling it that cheap, it's probably outdated anyway. Is there much difference when college text books come out with new editions?
you should ask your professor if its okay. chapters might be different but most of the information should be about the same.
The new version appears to have a review of the 2006 election. the older version was published in 2004. Probably this will make a difference.

Try Amazon.com. They have a lot of books, used and new, in the $70 range.

if you are the first generation of your family born in the United States do your college books get paid for by the governmentDo first generation minorities kids born in the US get their college books paid for?
No, not automatically. but there are alot of scholarship opportunities for first generation minority students. Try looking on some scholarship search websites. Also, i know that Sallie Mae specifically offers a 1st gen scholarship right now, so go visit their website.
nopeDo first generation minorities kids born in the US get their college books paid for?

I never heard of that. Perhaps there is a community organization that funds that from there own pocket. I know I used to live in a city where the Korean association was very active in their community. They would give loans or grants to Korean families for a variety of reasons.Do first generation minorities kids born in the US get their college books paid for?
I hope not. I already have to pay for my kids books I don't want to pay for everyone else's books too. The government doesn't actually foot the bill for all that. The money I pay in taxes does. If I don't have to buy so many things for so many other people then maybe I could buy something for ME and MY FAMILY.
I don't know about that but there are plenty of scholarships for first generation students. The scholarships may cover books.

Where an I sell my college books?

I have a stack of textbooks that piled up on me, since I already took the classes I won't need them anymore... Where can I see them? I tried craigslist no one calls :( how does amazon work?Where an I sell my college books?

You can get a quote on this website http://eaglesaver.com Then print a free shipping label at check out and use to ship your books to this company. As soon as your order arrives they will pay you with check or by PayPal. They pay fast and they are a better business bureau member.Where an I sell my college books?
Try the college bookstore. They buy back books. But only if they are the most recent edition. If your books are a few years old, a new edition is probably out, and nobody will buy them. Use Amazon to check for the most recent edition.
I use chegg dot com or you can call local bookstores in your area. I heard amazon dot com,

unsure if they give u a check. They may only give u credit to use on the site.

When should I buy my books for college?

I will be a freshman in the fall semester, and I was wondering whether I should buy my books early or wait until I get the syllabus from the professor? I don't really know what books I need either, but I do have my schedule made and there was a bookstore that said they could give me my books if i showed them my schedule. I've asked alot of different people and they all had different answers so i'm still not sure what to do. Please help! When should I buy my books for college?
Take your schedule to the bookstore, they will help you figure out what books you need.

As far as get them now or later. I would say get them now. As a freshman there are going to be a lot of people taking the same classes as you, so they could run out of a book and have to order it. Also, you have a better chance of getting used books (less money) if you go early. Most bookstores will allow you to return books for a refund up to the second week of class. So if a professor tells you that you don't need the book, or you need a different one you can return the one you bought.

You also may want to consider going to the bookstore, finding out what books you need and buying them online. This will be harder to return, but you will save more money.
WAIT FOR THE syllabus from the professor please!!!When should I buy my books for college?
Buy them early, believe me they sell out quickly. Most college bookstores have a list of the required books you need too.
I've always found it useful to wait until the first day of class, after you get your syllabus. once you do, sometimes professors will either scrap books or tell you where you can borrow the books from the school library and save you some extra bucks. since you'll be starting college soon, you'll need all the money you can. When should I buy my books for college?
You should buy them as soon as you can so you can get what you need before there is no more left! Go to the bookstore that knows what to do!
See if you can order them from barnes and noble for cheaper. College bookstores are notoriously overpriced.

What I do is wait until after the first week of classes to buy books. A lot of professors don't even use the books, so it's just a waste of money to buy them (depends on the class, of course). After the first week, you'll know which classes you'll need the book. Also, something else you can do is get a study partner and split the cost of the book for the class.
    Wait for the syllabus.

Get them online if you can. College bookstores are a racket.
Ifyou buy arly you have a better chance of getting used books. Much better deal.
contact all proffessors prior to class starting and get a list. Go to the store buy all the books that are used and appear to have actual applicable information towards your class, some books arent needed or are just filled with nothing. do your self a favor and get them early, used books can save you alot and so can amazon, ebay, etc. hope that helps.
I usually go to the bookstore (if I'm on campus) and see how much money I will need. You won't need your books on the first day of class, but if you want you can go ahead and buy them. But just a hint, down the road from the college I attend there is a bookstore that buys books from students and sells them cheaper than the college bookstore. You may want to check and see if there is one near your college.
Depends on the class. For the generals that everyone takes, but it online from half.com or something; you'll get real cheap and will avoid the price gouging bookstore. When you start to take some more specific courses, wait until the first day of class, (don't worry, you usually don't get any kind of weird assignments for a while) and see if the professor drops or adds books to what you need. It will save you a lot of money; personal experience. But go ahead and buy it online if you think you'll reference it again, especially if it has to do with your major or something you're interested in.
wait till you get the syllabus.. maybe for soem classes books will be recommended but not required..and always the cheapest way is to buy books from students who are a year ahead of you and already took the class. hang out in the department that the course belongs to, you should find ads about book sales.

    enjoy college!
I'd wait it out. Some professors don't necessarily require you to buy all the books. Plus, other books may be on reserve at the school library. And you might have some last minute schedule changes.
Gosh I hate buying books. You buy them early and the instructor changes the books or requests an additional one which the bookstore doesn't carry. You buy them late, well in most cases you can't because the bookstore runs out. It's a hassle either way. I don't know about your school, but in my school the instructors had their own personal websites where they have the syllabuses for the classes they teach on the website. You might want to check that. I usually try to buy them early though, because when the bookstore runs out, it might take a while for them to receive the new shipment. Hope this helps! Good luck!

If you can, wait until the fall. There is little demand in the summer and prices will drop, if you can hold out till fall, you will easily find buyers for a higher price.

Try Amazon; I'm not sure about Ebooks but I know they sell hardcopy used textbooks.

Have you tried to do a search online for these books? I know that my son's textbooks are available online for free. And many universities in the US have huge online libraries. Use the online library your school is affiliated with as many have licensing agreements with academic journals, publishing companies, etc. If your school doesn't have an affiliation with a library I would be wary of their credentials.
abebooks.com, they not only sell some of the cheapest books but when you decide to sell the book back you simply enter the books info and get a price quote, you drop the book off at any postal place in a PRE-PAID packaging(abebooks pay for the shipping), Ebooks are competely electronic and is basicly an online book so you can't sell back or buy used Ebooks.

Post flyers throughout campus and/or check with professors during the new quarter/semester to see if the same books are being used. If so, then you can offer them for sale to new students at the beginning of the course. However, you should keep the books. You're paying for the knowledge contained in those things.Any ideas on how to sale my college books?

When is the best time to buy your books for college?

I start school this friday and I haven't purchased any books yet. When is a good time to purchase the books for your classes? Should I wait til I have the class then go from there?

this is my first year of college..I'm not sure what i'm doing ahaha! When is the best time to buy your books for college?
The best time to purchase is before class starts. You can usually get them much cheaper used online than even the used ones at a college book store. If you wait until class starts, the used ones are usually gone from the book store, and you don't have time to buy online and wait a week for them to get shipped to you. So you have no choice but to buy them at the new price from the book store. (I've actually bought online after class starts, and it's a hassle trying to do the assignments for a week or so borrowing other people's books. You could overnight it, but that cost shipping is ridiculous.)

In my experience, I could usually get them for less than half the price for $100+ books. That adds up to quite a bit of savings.

Some professors will expect you to use the book the first day and assign homework from it. Though, if you don't have the book in those cases, you can usually share or borrow from someone who does have it. Many teachers won't require it on the first day, because they know a lot of students are slackers, and won't have gotten the book.

I usually would not have my books until after the first day of class, simply because I procrastinated. It was very rare that we didn't use the book, and I usually regretted when I hadn't saved the money ordering online ahead of time rather than waiting and needing to buy from the book store. In the rare case where we didn't use them, I could return them to the online store, sell them back to the book store for not that much less than I paid online, relist it for sale on Amazon myself, or sell it to an online textbook buyer. Lots of ways to get your money back. You really lose much more money buying from every book from the book store than you would buying used online and not needing 1 out of 5 books, which you could get most if not all of your money back for.

If in doubt, check the price you can get it online vs the book store. If you'd save a lot of money, buy it online ahead of time. If you wouldn't save much, wait til after class starts then buy at the book store. When is the best time to buy your books for college?
Yes, you should wait till you have your first class. Like I said on an earlier question, the professor may not even require the book. What I have been doing every semester for the past three years is waiting until the first day of class when the professor tells us whether we need the book or not. If we need it, I buy it. If we don't, I don't. Now if you buy the book before class begins and the professor says you dont need it, you may not be able to return it. So, just wait until class begins. When is the best time to buy your books for college?
There's usually nothing wrong with waiting until classes start. But if you're buying them online, you have to consider shipping time. And buying earlier means you're more likely to get good deals on used books.

Where or how do you get your college books?

There are many many places to buy your college books. Most schools have their own bookstore that will sell all the books for every class. This is usually the more expensive option but the most convenient. You can usually find your books through on-line sellers such as amazon, barnes %26amp; noble, half.com, etc. These are usually cheaper but requires you to know exactly what book you need well before classes start. Many professors place copies on reserve at the library for you to read but not take out. This is your cheapest option but least convenient and not all professors will do this. Also, many students will sell their books to other students after the semester is over. Some schools have facebook groups or other on-line marketplaces to help facilitate this. Textbook rentals are also an option but I have no personal experience with this.Where or how do you get your college books?
I get my textbooks at the college bookstore or Amazon.

    If buying from Amazon:

    - make sure you know what you need

    - buy the books at least 2 weeks in advance, unless you don't mind paying for shipping

Lately, I wait until the first day of class so I'll know what I need, and then when I have time, buy my books and supplies at the bookstore.
Some courses actually do require the new edition. I mean, think about how much a science textbook can be updated in a year (and science is not like English or History that stay basically the same).

And then some people may have scholarships where they are required to get their book from the bookstore to use their scholarship.Where or how do you get your college books?
i always use www.textbooks.com because they usually give you an amount that you're guaranteed to receive if you sell it back, and the books on there are loads cheaper than the book store and cheaper than most other textbook sites.
College bookstores usually have at least a few used copies, you know. They're fully aware students aren't going to pay full price for new books if they don't absolutely have to.Where or how do you get your college books?
You can find all the book information at the college book store. Then you can either buy it there (support the store) or buy it online from half.com, amazon.com, alibris.com
At college or and eBay or those type of web sites good luck
I usually get an older edition of the book on www.half.com unless it's crucial for my post-graduate studies...then I get the real thing in the campus bookstore.

There is an $80 difference, but the edition number is the same. I just worry about the page numbers matching up if the professor assigns reading by page #'s.If college books are the same "edition", will the book(including page numbers %26amp; such) all be exactly the same?
Match the ISBN number. If you are looking at something on-line many times re-seller's don't always advertise properly. It's best to buy your text books used at the bookstore. Once you buy them on-line you're stuck with them if incorrect. (college professor)If college books are the same "edition", will the book(including page numbers %26amp; such) all be exactly the same?
Check the ISBN. That will positively identify the book by title, author, and edition.

You should probably verify the sections that the professor assigns just to make sure the page numbers are the same.If college books are the same "edition", will the book(including page numbers %26amp; such) all be exactly the same?
More than likely they will be the same. But if there is a difference, point this out to your professor and ask them to refer to the chapter number instead. I am sure you won't be the only person to have purchased the less expensive book. I know I would!

How much should I expect to spend on books for college?

How Much Do Books For College Usually Range Around?

For one semester for a full-time student, how many books would the average student have and how much does it usually amount to? Comparison between all new and some new/used?How Much Do Books For College Usually Range Around?
Most college textbooks run about 100 to 150. Generally a full time student takes 6 classes. Used books are about half to 3/4 the price. So expect to spend about $600-$800 in books. How Much Do Books For College Usually Range Around?
It depends. In some classes you'll have several books and each of them will cost less than $15, and in other classes you'll have one book and it will cost you $150. Books that are designed to be textbooks tend to cost more than books that are sold to non-students too, because students are so likely to buy and sell used books that a publisher needs to recover all the costs of publishing a book and try to make some profit in the first couple of years after a textbook comes out and because some books have such a small readership (and will mostly be bought by libraries anyway) that everyone who buys a book has to pay a significant chunk of the fixed costs of publishing, but readers will buy new copies of general interest books for years and years.

If you go to a campus bookstore, they'll often have a page for ordering textbooks. You can choose a semester, and then a department, and then a class in that department, and the site will tell you what books are required and/or recommended, and how much they'll cost new or used (assuming that they are in stock. Most books will not be in stock at this time of year, but of course you aren't going there to buy books right now anyway). If you want to be really thorough you can come up with an imaginary class schedule for a semester at a college or university you might like to attend and then pick those classes at that school's campus bookstore, but you can just play around at a campus bookstore site, too. You can also look for copies at places like Amazon and Half.com -- you can usually get better deals on new and used textbooks at places other than the campus bookstore. How Much Do Books For College Usually Range Around?
range from 100 to 300+, some classes require multiple books but they cost a lot less, for a full time student, probably 4-6 classes, you're looking at an average of 1k worth of books, just an estimate

thanksWanting to buy college books. are books with different volumes basically the same?
While the books don't change much from one edition to another, one thing they DO tend to change is the problems and problem numbers. Therefore, with an older edition, you'd have to keep checking with someone with the new edition to make sure you were doing the right homework. So you might as well just get the new one to be sure.Wanting to buy college books. are books with different volumes basically the same?
for the most part they are the same. the differences are probably dates, some information or sources, but basically it is the same book. if you are trying to save money on books the best thing to do is ask your professor for the BINC code on the book. if you type that into google you get a ton of stuff at cheaper prices. i do that every semester and it hasnt let me down yet.Wanting to buy college books. are books with different volumes basically the same?
it really depends on the subject you are taking and the publisher. usually books don't differ that much from edition to edition, with the exception of reorganizing chapters and adding minor information. Unless there has been a major advancement in the field, books really dont change that much.

Did anyone know how cheap college books are?
that's fine if it is the current edition that your college is using.
I guess it really depends on where your money lies. The college which I attend costs me around $30,000.00 every nine months just in tuition and fees, so paying out a small amount of money to get the books from the book store isn't really that big of a deal. I usually pick them up only when I really need them anyways, so it doesn't result in that big of a problem. One thing which I would really like to see a little bit cheaper, however, is when you purchase CD-Rom type books that they come a little bit cheaper. Paying $100.00 for a little box that you're only going to use for one fourth of the year and doesn't even come with any paper is rediculous.

Usually the supporting facts and examples will be aimed at the country its from. For instance, a Canadian version of a geography book will focus more on Canadian locations. Which is best for college text books-Kindle, Nook Color, or iPad?

I heard college textbooks are cheaper electronically. But I still want to be able to highlight and mark pages. So which of these would be best for college text books? I like the idea of the anti-glare in the Kindle, but does it offer more than the nook or ipad?Which is best for college text books-Kindle, Nook Color, or iPad?
The Kindle will be better for long-form reading of text-based books because of its E Ink Pearl display. It also is about 1/3 of the weight of a iPad and about 1/2 the weight of the Nook Color. Reading from the iPad and Nook Color's LCD screen will be like reading from a computer monitor.

Any content that's graphics-based, especially color-graphics-based, will be much better on an iPad or Nook Color. PDFs are best on the iPad (as opposed to the Nook Color or Kindle or any other ereader). Apps and games and web browsing are way better on the iPad and the Color Nook. If these characteristics are more important to you than long-run reading of text, go for the iPad if money is no object or the Nook Color if the iPad is too much.

One last suggestion: If you have a laptop, consider loading it up with ereader software (free) for each of those devices and seeing how your first semester or so goes before buying an ereader. You'll know a lot more about which books are available in which formats. Ereaders will probably advance; your knowledge of what work methods fit your style certainly will. You'll be much more sure of what to get (and having the real keyboard of a laptop handy may prove to be very helpful in the meantime).Which is best for college text books-Kindle, Nook Color, or iPad?

So i dont know if you're into the idea of buying used books, but whether you are or aren't the site that compares prices of ALL books used and new is addall.com. I got all of my books for this semester there; i had to buy SEVEN books and I got them used so the grand total plus shipping and handling and taxes was 140 !! that's really good for me i mean seven books?!

SO like you just type in the title or author or isbn of the book and find it among the search answers, and you'll get at least twenty options of websites online selling them used and new, with the cheapest price first and then gradually increasing to some ridiculous price. best thing is, theres a direct link to the exact page on every website that you need, so yeah.

My computer teacher told me about this site a year ago and it's really saved me a bunch of money, so far i got half of my books already and the rest are still shipping.

i have to read a book off the college bound books list, i was wondering what a good book was to read, at least for a teenager.

THANKS!I have to read a book off the college bound books list; whats a good one?
    if this is the list:

    http://als.lib.wi.us/Collegebound.html

    then i suggest:

The Chocolate War - ive never read it but they made it into a series on tv once and it was pretty good.

The Great Gatsby - lol never read it either but i plan to cuz its a classic and everyone says its great.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - this was made into a movie which was really interesting. i didnt even know it was a book! now i want to read it.

To Kill a Mockingbird - READ THIS!!!!!!!!! this is such a GREAT book totally recommend!! please read this!

The Bell Jar - i read this not long ago and its quite sad but very well written.

The Diary of a Young Girl - really great read!! its the diary of Anne Frank

Of course read the classics like Pride and Predjudice, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, anything by William Shakespeare, and read as much great poetry as u can!

so to answer your question to pick just ONE to read i quess i personally wqould recommend To Kill a Mockingbird. Absolutely great!I have to read a book off the college bound books list; whats a good one?
Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" is good. It's your typical tragic romance.

"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald is beautifully written, but the language is very suggestive and cloudy so you've got to be awake and on your toes while reading.

Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre." It's your typical Cinderella story.I have to read a book off the college bound books list; whats a good one?
i don't know if this is on the list but my favorite book of all time is The Power of One

it is a big book but don't let that stop you

it is about boxing but NOT ONLY THAT

it is such a good book, PLEASE don't let the boxing subject stop you from reading it because it is hardly a theme

and trust me- once you pick it up-it'll be hard to put it back down 'till your done!!

just trust me and read it

you'll learn so much and it will soon be your favorite book too!!!!!!
I hope I'm looking at the same list that you have. Anyway:

Fahrenheit 451, To Kill A Mockingbird, Call of the Wild (easy read), Animal Farm (easy, lots of symbolism), Frankenstein, The Joy Luck Club, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings (really great, easy), Growing Up (I've read this once a year since I had to read it my freshman year in college. Definite favorite and it's a fast read). I tried to put myself in the mind of a teenager for this. I hope this condensed list helps.

I'd just go to the bookstore and do the buy back. You don't get much but online you don't always get a good price. It depends on how old the books are. If their books from this year they probably won't see for much because many classes are getting new editions for 2010What is the best place to sell used college books?
sell them to students who are going to need it at your college. that's what i do. send your prof an email or something.

Do I order books for college or do they give them to me?

I dont know if I need to order books or if the college gives them to me and I got awarded 750.00 dollars for books but my books are going to cost 100 more than that do i have to pay the extra???Do I order books for college or do they give them to me?
Yes you buy yourself. I bought almost all of mine on craigslist.com for pretty cheap. I've heard half.com is good and there's also amazon.com.Do I order books for college or do they give them to me?
Yes. In college, you have to pay for all of your books. I know it sucks, but when you no longer need them; you can sell them back to the school and they will pay you for them. Depends how good of condition they are in, but some colleges will pay you some money.

Hope I helped! (:Do I order books for college or do they give them to me?
textbooks are ridiculous expensive. Looks like you'll have to pay remaining $100. Try to look for them online. College bookstores and other local textbook stores jack up prices a lot.

Try www.bigwords.com. It looks searches all the major online textbook sellers for the best price.

Like Rochelle said, you can always sell them back the ones you feel you don't need anymore. Keep in mind that you even though you might be pressed for cash, it's sometimes a good idea to save certain textbooks for reference. At best you'd probably get 45% of the original price back when selling.

Great Christian books for college age students?

I really want to read Fearless, but there's about three holds on it. So I need a book to fill my time while I wait for it.

It doesn't exactly have to be Christian book, that's just what I prefer. And it doesn't have to specifically for college students. Non-fiction, fictions.

International Book Project also takes current fiction and non-fiction books and children's books. They will either give you the name of a place to mail your books to or you can mail the books to them and they will mail them for you. If you buy from a reseller just make sure they have good feedback. Order now for next term you will not get your book in time. I go to the book store and copy the isbn numbers down. That way you will be sure to get the right book. Another tip is to make sure you don't buy the teacher ed. as it might seam like a good idea but ends up being harder to learn. The teacher ed. are cheaper so watch out.Where is the absolute best place on line to buy used college books?
There are many choices, but my preferred choice is www.bookbyte.com. They have the largest selection and are reasonable price wise. Otherwise, you can try abe books.Where is the absolute best place on line to buy used college books?
I've always purchased my books from half.com and usually found the best prices however you will need to know the ISBN's or all the detail to ensure you get the right books as its not just a site for college text books.
one other suggestion (if you can plan in advance):

go to the last day of class for the class you will take the next semester (make sure the reading list is *exactly* the same). if this is possible... you will undoubtedly be able to buy a book for about 50% of the new cost, since students will only get 25% from the bookstore. yeah... it takes some planning and some legwork, but it's another way to get used books.

What is the best website for college books?

Its not just one website its more like a search engine.

Because you don't always find the best deal at the same website all the time. Usually it's best to look around and compare on trusted websites.

What I do is google "compare textbooks", pick whatever site i want, enter my ISBN number (# on the back of the textbook) and it gives me the lowest price between like 20 online stores and i just click the link.

Its more work, but you're gonna save lots of $$$.

Also look up coupons, like on retailmenot.com (i think that's the website) and you can get coupons for like free shipping.

Cute, oversized bags that I can fit my books in for college?

I'm a college freshmen and for my first week I used this one bag I found at TJMaxx but it doesn't fit alot of my books esp my math book, so I was wondering where I can get a cute college appropriate bag that I can most of my books in for a good price?

I see girls all the time carrying around no books in thier hands because they got them all to fit in the bag.Cute, oversized bags that I can fit my books in for college?
I got one from target that I used for awhile. They are really cute, but if you have to carry a lot of books at the same time, especially big ones, it really hurts your shoulder after awhile. It's better just to stick with a cute backpack in that case. If you are dead set on getting one look at target and at the mall and stuff. They have them everywhere, just pick an over sized purse and use that. It's really up to your personal style and price range. Over sized bags are still in, so they are everywhere. Even wal-mart has them. Good luck!Cute, oversized bags that I can fit my books in for college?
It's rare that I see someone without a backpack. Unless someone has small books and only a few notebooks, their class material is heavy and is only comfortable to carry with a backpack. It sounds like you have many books and at least one heavy one. I would just get a normal backpack. Use a shoulder/fashion bag for the days when you don't have a lot to carry.

So I'm signed up for 3 classes in Green River Community College, Auburn Campus, and I don't know what books to buy. How do I find out?How do I know what books to buy for college?
Go to the first class sessions before you buy books. The instructor will probably discuss the reading list and indicate which books should probably be bought and which can be read in the college library where they are often placed on two-hour reserve which means that they can be checked out for in library use only for two hours at a time.
Print out your class schedule and go to the book store. Ask the clerk what books you need for those classes. After that, you will get the hang of it. Or if you want to go the cheaper route, you can buy your books online. Read this article to find out how to save a lot of money on your college books. For me I always bought what the online class schedule said was the required reading before the class so I could get the used version of the book. If you wait till after the first day you might have to buy the new version. Bookstores normally have a no return policy after a week from the start of classes. Ask them before you buy any book.
Usually, you wait till the first day of each class, when the teacher hands out a syllabus, which lists required reading. Your college's bookstore might be able to tell you which books have been ordered for which class. Good luck in school. How do I know what books to buy for college?

How can I buy books outside, not from college's store, using FA?

It might seem to be a silly question but I truly don't know what to do after receiving FA. I've just gotten mine a week ago and I'm planning to buy books in somewhere else, not in the college's bookstore. How do I take out the money they awarded me and use that to spend? Does the school send me a check or I have to open an account? By the way, I'll be attending Cal Poly Pomona. How can I buy books outside, not from college's store, using FA?
    I Dont Know.
First of all financial aid office takes out the class fees then issues you a check right before the next quarter, all the money from financial, after they take out for the costs of classes is yours to buy school books or what ever. They usually issue you one check, and then you can buy your books someplace else. I have always bought mine online because paying $172.00 for one book at the college I get it for $64.00 online at e-campus, cheapbooks. How can I buy books outside, not from college's store, using FA?
I dont know how that works. It depends on how your FA is issued. My school uses an account and takes it from there. And the refund doesn't come until 2-4 weeks later. Too late to buy books then.

Some good books for a college student?

I am a College Senior and looking for some books to read over break. I'm looking for two types of books: "classic" books as well as current (or contemporary) best-sellers. I enjoy books which are emotionally involving, but nothing that would fall into the "romance novel" genre. (Also, no Twilight suggestions).

Books by Ian McEwan (he wrote Atonement)

Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides (this won the Pulitzer Prize)

    The Road, by Cormac McCarthy

Cloud Atlas or Black Swan Green, by David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas was shortlisted for the Booker Prize)

Life of Pi, by Yann Martel (won the Booker Prize)

and for emotionally-involving classics, I'd suggest:

A Hero of our Time, by Lermontov

or Notes From Underground, by DostoevskySome good books for a college student?
I would suggest a book by Danielle Steel They are good books.

Why are college school books so exspensive?

My wife is going to a university and her school books cost 600+.. Why are school books so exspensive? Why are college school books so exspensive?
A lot of research and time goes into college texts. Sometimes, it can take experts years to produce a book. Further, they sell in much lower volumes than mainstream books.

So, an author can crank out a novel pretty quickly, and sell boatloads of them to many different age/demographic groups, whereas text book authors sell fewer and take longer to write... in order for anyone to make up the effort of a text book, they simply must charge more for it.Why are college school books so exspensive?
Because its a University. The cost a little less in a junior college. And even less in a regular schoolWhy are college school books so exspensive?
Captive market, you have to buy the books, no need for competitive pricing.
They are expensive because there is such a limited market for them. You might want to check the internet for cheaper sources. Also the professors who recomend them for their classes get free copies.

Each book, depending on the courses, vary in cost. Books for courses in languages, medical, and math run up to $200. Other books are generally $100-$150. So take a look at your courses and average about $100 for all your books except those in language, medical, math, and so on. Im trying to get to an ivy leage college, what books can I use to improve my essay skills?

first of all, I will be applying as a transfer, so there is a more specific type of essay in that case as I have been told. What books will help me develop special writing abilities and skills needed to make an ivy school essay, Ive been reading elements of style by the way. Thanks!Im trying to get to an ivy leage college, what books can I use to improve my essay skills?
In addition to books on style, read some of Emerson's essays, Lincoln's second inaugural address, and Kennedy's inaugural address. Learning to follow the train of thought in these works will help you to develop the ability to write effectively.

Also start the habit of proofreading everything that you write. That is the best way to learn formal writing style.

Can someone give me a detailed list of books for starters in College?

I want to study at home so can you list out the kind of books needed for the first timers?

I mean what books are included in the first year of college, Liberal arts or otherwise?Could anyone list the books out, the common books, in all subjects, from English to Arts, to Psychology to Science etc?Can someone give me a detailed list of books for starters in College?
You may want to study the books that are actually assigned to you by your teacher, so you wont be studying random material. Math books are universal though, so whatever level of math you're in, or feel you need to brush up on, you should purchase.... but as far as homework assignments are concerned, you would still need to buy the math book assigned to you by your teacher so you're doing the work he/she assigns. Can someone give me a detailed list of books for starters in College?
There aren't really common books....even if you look at a common intro science course there are different text books...and then all bets are completely off for something like a lit class. It's all based on individual professor preference--I've even seen textbooks vary for the same course, depending on which specific section you were in.

You'd probably be better off reading books on any topic that interests you so that when you get to college you have a better idea of what types of subjects you might want to take classes in (because it's impossible to study all the subjects offered by any school).

What's the most you ever spent on college text books?

In my first year of college I spent almost $600 on text books. What's the most you ever spent on college text books?
I've seen friends have to pay much more than that for books for one semester. It's extortion! This is where real world education comes into play. Students have to apply their economic creativity to drop the book prices to as low as possible. I can say I have done that for two semesters and have actually netted a small profit after reselling online. Never buy your books in a college bookstore unless they will match online prices if you can provide proof. Shop online for books. Shop early! If you buy books when everyone else is shopping then you will pay a higher price. If possible, check out the book editions. It's cheaper to use an earlier edition that may just have had a few new pages added. Check your college library. I was actually surprised when I did find some books available there. If your class is using ordinary classic subjects like english lit' or classics, it's very easy to find full text of plenty of works online for zero cost output. If your prof' is only going to use a portion of a text, don't buy the entire book, just borrow or copy it. If these scheming lowballing "educators" want to continue to price gouge students let them understand that you're up to playing their dirty game by reintroducing some healthy economic competition back into the college book buying process.

Can I read college text books online?

My classes at lacc college have started for winter but my financial aid have not came yet. I cant do my class work nor homework because i can't afford to pay the books. Also financial aid say they don't give vouchers for winter session. Do anybody know a free website i can read the text books. Can I read college text books online?
If there were websites where you could get all your textbooks for free, how would textbook companies make any money? I'm afraid this is not legal.

Now, there are some ways you might be able to save on textbooks, or avoid paying altogether if you don't mind some inconvenience. You could try:

    1. the obvious: look online for all your books. Most you can get way cheaper than at your bookstore.

    2. for humanities classes that don't have a regular textbook, you might be able to find literature, political and philosophical essays, etc. for free online, especially older stuff that's in the public domain. Google Books might have it or an online database specific to the time period or author.

    3. the library probably has copies of some of your textbooks. Of course, if it's a large class, someone may have thought of this before you, but you can recall it from them (just be prepared for someone to recall it back).

    4. find a buddy in each of your classes to share a book with. If you can't find a classmate, you could try talking to the professor to see if you can borrow his/her copy just to scan or photocopy the first few chapters until your aid comes through. But they might say no and I wouldn't blame them; after all, they need the book too to plan lessons.

Can you purchase college books like e-books? If so are they reasonably priced?

I only have about $400 for materials this semester. So I must be a creative tightwad. Can you purchase college books like e-books? If so are they reasonably priced?
Yes, from personal experience, you only save a little more over the actual books.

I'd spend that extra bit, get the hard copies, and try to sell it at close to retail, but cheaper than used books, and try to subsidize the cost a bit...

E-Books don't allow for resale! :oPCan you purchase college books like e-books? If so are they reasonably priced?
Free ones are available to download. Check out the enormous website below. Can you purchase college books like e-books? If so are they reasonably priced?
Try websites like ebay.com and barnesandnobles.com Sometimes teachers use the same book for a few years so someone out there probably has the books you need and will sell them cheaper because theyre used.

My only thing is that I want the characters to be older... like 18+. (unless if the book is suuuper good, then idk what age the characters are. lol) Does anyone have any suggestions? When do you usually have to buy books for the Fall semester of college?

I have already signed up for community college for Fall 2010 and registered for classes and all that stuff. On the online book store for my college, it says that the books I need are only available through pre-order.

When do you usually have to buy books for the fall semester of college? When do you usually have to buy books for the Fall semester of college?
College bookstores and book companies make a TON of money from you buying their books at full price. So they try to get you hooked on buying from them before you even get there.

You don't even need to think about buying your books until the first week or two before your classes start. If you can get a list of the books you'll need before you start your classes, you'll most likely be able to order them online for a lot cheaper.

Once in a while your professor will put together a packet or something that you won't be able to get online. But for the most part, I'd steer clear of getting books from the college bookstore. If you want some tips for saving money on college books, check out this article: http://makecollegereality.com/succeed/ge鈥?/a>
Many students don't buy books until they have attended the first day of class and a) are sure they intend to stay in the classes, and b) are sure that the book listed is the correct one. Others do buy the book in advance, but keep in mind that unless what you have been assigned are things like readings packets compiled by the professor, there is no requirement that you buy the books from the college bookstore at all. Most are comparatively expensive.

Another warning based upon a recent experience I had with a student: If you do buy the book, especially from some place other than the school bookstore, don't unwrap it and start looking through it before the class starts (unless you have been given a specific assignment by the professor to do so). If the book turns out to be the wrong one, or the professor changes his/her mind, you may only get 50% back on the cost of the book if you removed it from the wrappings. When do you usually have to buy books for the Fall semester of college?
First day of classes, when you know if the teacher really wants you to get the book. Sometimes the lists aren't updated.

Might I suggest you not buy brand new books, and buy old ones than you can sell to someone else when you're done? Textbooks.com is a good one, and you can find several others good ones as well. You won't be using the books after the class unless they are major related, and some you might not use at all. It's wiser to buy a used book, than buy a pricey new one.
Wait until class is actually in session to buy your books; some teachers will list a textbook that they aren't going to use in class just because they're required to list a book.

A way to save major money is to check what books you need from the online bookstore, and then buy them from eBay, Amazon, local used bookstores (ones near campus are best), or Alibris (my personal favorite). Shop around to get the best deal. Sometimes if the textbook you're going to use is a brand new edition (2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc) you can ask your professor if you can use an older version of the book. They'll usually say yes, because the content doesn't change that much, and you can pick the book up for even less. When do you usually have to buy books for the Fall semester of college?
    WAIT WAIT WAIT!

The secret to buying college textbooks is simply this. The school store suckers young college kids with HIGH PRICES on books because they know that your freshman student is going to run in and buy every book the professor lists on the reading list.

I suggest you wait... wait until the last possible second when the Prof tells you that you will need to read from the book, or do homework from the book. Many Prof's list a textbook on the syllabus that they NEVER EVEN REFER TO during the class. You drop a cool hundred on a book that is going to sit on your bookshelf all semester.

Free advice... get an amazon.com account, and if you really need the book... buy it used on amazon textbooks. What else is cool... school bookstores RIP YOU OFF on resale of the books. Sell your book on amazon to other kids who need it, and you make more money while saving that kid a ton on book prices too!
There are some sites were you can buy used books at a cheaper price. I get my textbooks from amazon. I would buy them before the semester starts, so you'll feel prepared for school. Hope this helps :0)
