How necessary is it to keep college books in your major?

It's much easier financially to rent books, or sell them back. My majors are Psychology and EnglishHow necessary is it to keep college books in your major?
It depends. Whenever you're thinking about selling/keeping something, you need to ask yourself "am I going to need this in my future". If so, "what am I going to use it for". Being that you're given so many textbooks in college, it can be difficult sorting out what you need and what's extra for your field.

Your first step to answering your question should be to ask yourself "how was this book used during my college career." Did your professor refer to the book often? Was the book helpful in explaining some difficult topics? Was this book easy to understand? All of these questions will help you in determining the correct decision.

Secondly, as mentioned previously, you should ask yourself "how am I going to use this in my future." Is this book going to be used for reference? Or, am I never going to open this book again? This can be difficult for both psychology and english majors.

As an education major, I keep all of my books while the majority of my colleagues sell them back to the bookstore. My philosophy is, "obviously the professor assigned this book for a reason. There has to be some reason why I need to keep it". Plus, I think for both psychology and education, textbooks come in handy when you need to find quick diagnoses. Determine how specific the book is for your needs.

As an english concentration, I can tell you that half of my textbooks, I'm never going to look at again. But, I love to read. So, I keep them in the hopes of getting an opportunity to read them again in my future. That's another thing to take into consideration. Obviously you chose these majors for a reason. Hopefully, that is because you have a passion for both subjects :). If the books give you pleasure, keep them.

Last but not least, you should evaluate your financial status. What does renting or selling these books gain, financially? If you really need the money, sell them. If not, why not keep them. Also take into consideration that you can write down all the book names and buy them on Amazon or Ebay for extremely low prices somewhere in your future.

Point is, there is no set rule when it comes to "necessity," unless your books are field specific. For example a book on lesson planning when you want to be a teacher. You decide what's important and what's not.

Hope this helps

I highly doubt you'll need them, though of course it's possible. You may want to hang on to upper level texts if you're considering grad school. I've looked at some of my books a couple times, and there have been a few I sold back that I wish I had kept, but generally I haven't needed them.

Keep in mind that you'll likely be able to find the information you may need from the books elsewhere - keeping the books just makes it easier to find it quickly. How necessary is it to keep college books in your major?
