I paid cash for tuition and books, and I know there is a form that you can file to get some of that back, does anyone know what it's called? I thought it was 1098t but it is not.
Thanks! What is the name of the IRS form you need if you're a student who paid cash for college/books?
You can use whichever of these works out best:
8863 to get one of the available credits
8917 to take it as a deduction instead
If someone took you as a dependent and already filed, they get the credit/deduction. If they didn't take it they should amend. If nobody took you as a dependent this year/yet, you can take yourself and the credit/deduction if it works out best that way. Get forms at www.irs.gov
Amounts paid for tuition %26amp; fees (not books) by cash/credit card/loans qualify. What is the name of the IRS form you need if you're a student who paid cash for college/books?
According to IRS Publication 970, "Tax Benefits for Education," what you are seeking for is the Hope Credit.
And I quote, "Student-activity fees and expenses for course-related books, supplies, and equipment are included in qualified education expenses only if the fees and expenses must be paid to the institution as a condition of enrollment or attendance."
