How much should i charge to resell my college books?

i have the 2 NEW copies of both textbooks you need for freshman english. how much do books go for?How much should i charge to resell my college books?
If you're selling them on marketplace sites like amazon or half.com, I usually put my books for 50 cents cheaper than the lowest price already listed. This helps me sell my book quicker. You can definitely ask for more money if it's new.

If you're selling the books in person, just check out amazon or half.com and see how much people are selling the books online for to help give you at least a starting point for what to ask for.

You can also ask for a quote from a website that sells used textbooks online so you'll know right away how much money you'll get and the process won't take as long as selling them on your own. You can find places to sell your books back online here: http://makecollegereality.com/succeed/ge鈥?/a>How much should i charge to resell my college books?

Why do college books constantly change editions?

They constantly update books, edition after edition, you can't but a used book and the new ones cost a fortune like $150!

when they update they don't change much, they just add a little irrelevant pictures and website address! Why do college books constantly change editions?
because they only make money on the new books. Used books the person selling it makes the money. They move some chapters around (1 is now 5 ) add a sentence BAM new edition. This keeps the publisher and authors richWhy do college books constantly change editions?
Yep. They want you to buy the new book. They make it just different enough that it's hard to use the old book, and then stop printing the old one so that the schools have to tell you to buy the new one. It's a big scam.

  • When do I purchase my college books?

I'll be going to Indiana University this fall and was wondering when I purchase my books. Do I do it before I go this fall, or will the professors give me a book list on the first day or something. When do I purchase my college books?
I assume somewhere on your school's website is a list of books required for each class. I usually purchase mine before classes start because the books may be sold out and you will end up waiting several weeks till you get your book. Also, check your school's bookstore and see how much the books cost. More than likely, you will find the same books way cheaper on ebay or half.com than at the bookstore.
I recommend that you check out the book store before classes start. If the books for your classes seem a little low on inventory, I would probably purchase them then. Sometimes, not enough books are ordered and it sucks to get by while waiting for them to come in which is why some people choose not to wait.

From my experience however, I like to wait until the first day of class. Many of my professors have been very sympathetic to the cost of books and sometimes tell you that older editions may be used if you can get them cheaper. The content is pretty much the same as long as you stick to editions no more than 3 to 5 back. When do I purchase my college books?
I get my books the week before the semester starts. I go to the bookstore and all the books are organized by class. There is a list of all the classes and what books you need to purchase for each class.
"or will the professors give me a book list on the first day or something."

Ask them. You got email, they got email. Get typing. When do I purchase my college books?
I find my book list online. Go to your school's website and go to the section for students. There should be a book list somewhere there.

Found a error in one of my college text books, who would i contact to get this fixed?

In one of my education art college text books a piece of artwork is misidentified (wrong painter). who would i contact to get this fixed? Can I get paid for this?Found a error in one of my college text books, who would i contact to get this fixed?
Write to the publisher. The address is on the title page. But no, you won't get paid. And it won't get fixed until the next time a new edition of the book comes out.Found a error in one of my college text books, who would i contact to get this fixed?
    No, you won't get paid.

Contact the publisher - as the person above suggested - but also drop a line to the author. There is usually an institution listed beneath the author. That way they can make certain it is corrected in the next printing/edition.

    Good catch!

Where do I find out what curriculum/books a college uses?

I won't be going to a college I just want to know where I can find out the books they require so I can learn on my own. I have looked on the websites of the schools that look interesting to me (art %26amp; design colleges by the way) and all they have are the lists of the classes that they require you to take.

Thanks!Where do I find out what curriculum/books a college uses?
A lot of bookstores are online now, so if you just want the books : 1. Go to the website and find their bookstore, since you are not ordering you will not need a student number. 2. Enter the course number in designated area and you should find out what book is required for the course. 3. Take down the ISBN # of the book and go to half.com Amazon.com or some used book store and buy your book. Since you are not a registered student, you would not be able to order through the campus.Where do I find out what curriculum/books a college uses?
dWhere do I find out what curriculum/books a college uses?
The textbooks are usually chosen by the professors, so they wouldn't be available from a master list. You might try a search for used textbooks on the topics that interest you on a site like Alibris.com

Can we donate college books to like a goodwill??

I was just wondering. I have some old books that I hate to just throw away and rather give to someone/someplace that can make good use of them? What you think??Can we donate college books to like a goodwill??
I don't see why not. Who know who you will be helping by dropping those books off. If its not worth selling them back to where you purchased them and you will not be attending graduate school -- that is an excellent idea. Once I've completed graduate school I might very well do what you suggested.
I'd think so. You can also donate them to a local library or (if they're not too old) sell them at your local college campus for a fair price. Can we donate college books to like a goodwill??
of course you can, those old books w/ old material is considered new material to certain groups...Africa for example needs books...old or new
Please do! I've been able to get textbooks from Goodwill before, and it has really helped me stay in a tight budget. Can we donate college books to like a goodwill??
Having worked in thrift stores~ sometimes this old books get tossed because no one will buy them. Especially dated college textbooks....Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. MIGHT be able to sell them, but if not, they will get recycled.

Instead, I would recommend donating them to someplace where someone might get the good out of them ~ what comes to mind is to donate them to a lending library in a impoverished part of your state OR to an emergency shelter, day shelter, prison, rehab, or community center.
I suggest you call your local Goodwill store and ask if books are accepted. Check to see if the books are being used at a local college and sell them to the bookstore. If you can't sell them and they might be of interest to someone other than a student, see if a local senior center or nursing home might be interested in the books. However, if they are hardbound, they might be too heavy for older folks. Then, there are crafters that use old books to make new things. You can place an ad on something like Craig's List to donate the books or look for local crafters that might like to use them for their projects.

I hope this helps. Good luck!
If they're recent editions, somebody can use them. If you can't find a convenient charity that will take them, consider donating them to the university library. Lots of students have money trouble and would love to be able to get the book from the library instead of having to buy it. I've done that for courses where I didn't think I was going to need the book for reference later. If the university library doesn't want them, you can put up a poster on campus offering the books for free, and I guarantee somebody will take them off your hands.

I would say the best place would be play.com because it is one of the most popular websites for books, DVDs, CD's etc and is usually the first place people would look and as an added bonus they are letting you sell things for free until the 31st of January. Although you could just use ebay or amazon but it wouldn't be my recommendation and they will charge.
Ebay is always good. Amazon works too sometimes if there aren't tons of used copies for sale already.

Does anyone know of a good place to get audio texts of college books?

I'm in nursing school, and have been looking for audio downloads of some of the textbooks. If anyone knows of where I might could find college texts, in audio, I'd greatly appreaciate it.....Does anyone know of a good place to get audio texts of college books?
In general, there are no audio downloads for 99.99% of textbooks. The only case in which audio texts are available are when textbook authors intended to make an audio version of it from the start, because publishers don't make audio versions of standard textbooks. The textbooks are updated too frequently, there's far too much material, and much information like figures, diagrams, and illustrations can't be described when referenced, particularly for any subjects in medicine or the sciences. The only audio option is to get an electronic version of the textbook and screen reader software.

Why are college text books SO expensive?

Text books for $80 in college bookstores that are the same size on store shelves are sold for $10 bucks. Why is this?

Furthermore, where is a good site to find cheap used books? Why are college text books SO expensive?
I just got done purchasing all of my books on Amazon. BUT listen very carefully -- find out what classes you are taking and who teaches them, ask him/her if it is alright to use the previous edition of the course text (it almost always is because not much changes in the text) and most instructors are cool with it, then look for that previous edition on Amazon. I'm taking 5 classes this semester and only spent $90 on books. One of them I got for $.01!!! Good luck!

Why are college text books SO expensive?
Your textbooks are not sold in regular stores and will never become best sellers. They have a very limited audience and a very limited number of places they will be sold. If a professor drops the book next year, they'll never get rid of them, so they only print a certain number at a time - so if the book becomes somewhat popular they have to do many re-printings, and that's expensive. The professors who wrote the books make almost nothing from the sale of them, and neither do the bookstores, which is why so many campuses have let Borders or Barnes and Noble take over the bookstores. They couldn't afford to keep running them.
I actually worked in a college textbook store and let me say - the college itself actually doesn't make that much money off of the books! It's the book manufacturers that mark it up so much because they know students HAVE to have the books.

I bought most of mine off of half.com, which is part of eBay. Just be careful to make sure that it is the right edition number - they will switch editions every couple years sometimes just so that you have to buy new and can't buy used, but it messes up page numbers and they will have different material. It's best to search by the ISBN number - that's the long number above the barcode on the back of the book.

What I used to do is go into the bookstore at the college to see which edition and how much it is online vs. in store (buying online means you pay shipping and there's a delay but it's usually worth it) and write down all the ISBN numbers. Then I check half.com and make the purchases I need! Good luck :)Why are college text books SO expensive?

Most colleges have buy-back days where they will buy used textbooks. You can ask your old school or other nearby colleges when and if they do this. You probably won't get much for them though. They also won't take any out-dated (and they change books quite often it seems) or extremely worn out books.

You can try amazon.com or eBay.com to sell them as well. Or ask other college students if they will be taking any of the courses you needed the books for, maybe they will buy them from you if you offer them a good deal.

Any good series of books for college guys?

I know there are plenty of books for girls (like twilight) and younger kids (Harry potter for instance), but are there any really dark grim series off books for a 20 year old college guy like me?Any good series of books for college guys?
Alex Cross series by James Patterson. Begins with "Along Came a Spider." Quite action packed with the whole psychotic serial killer running around. Good books, though.

And just on another note, I'll give the claim Twilight = girl books. But I won't give you the claim Harry Potter = younger kids. If anything books 5 and up are more for adults with the violence and raging war.
I'm not a big fan of either series you pointed out, haha.

Chuck Palahniuk is a master at dark, creepy and grim in several aspects.

Invisible Monsters, Choke, Diary, Lullaby, Snuff.

Fight Club is the most known.

They're all pretty heavy with mature content,

Snuff is probably the one that actually slightly creeped me out.Any good series of books for college guys?
Margaret, you are officially retarded. The one to encourage someone to be stupid is the one that I hope dies in a horrible fire made from burning twilight books.

    ANYWAYS

I don't think there are really any series written for college students in particular. If you want something a little more adult and dark and gritty you might want to try Clive Barker, H.P. Lovecraft, or at the very least Stephen King or Dean Koontz.
The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix. Dark, Creepy, Depressing, College level.

The books in this awesome series are Sabriel, Lirael, and AbhorsenAny good series of books for college guys?
Dark and grim? Hmmm...look at some sci-fi/fantasy, especially Laurel K. Hamilton (if you like vampire stories) or Anne Rice (old school vampire stories that started the "sexy vampire" genre).

Edit: go with elle's suggestion. CP is well worth reading. When I managed a bookshop, we always sold out of his stuff, fast fast fast.

You could also look at Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, if you haven't had it assigned in one of your English courses yet.
ummm...Stephen King maybe I only saw the shining the movie, but loved it!! his books are like books for young adults so yeah! ;D

Well, used books actually make books expensive. A publisher has to put out and sell a set quota of NEW books, when people start buying used books, the NEW books stay on the shelves. Therefore the publishers have to jack up their prices to fulfill their quota.

In studying for the SATs, you should definitely use the College Board book, as they contain real questions, perhaps then supplemented by others like the Princeton Review or Barron's. For a comparison of the major test prep companies, see http://www.nerld.com/blog/2011/07/08/a-comparison-of-major-test-prep-companies/, and for tips on studying for the SAT, see http://www.nerld.com/blog/2011/07/08/how-to-prepare-for-the-act-and-sat/.

A lot of times the campus bookstore has a text book sell-back where they just give you the cash, but it's still like paying an arm and a leg for something - and then getting fingers and toes back. You could try selling on Amazon, or selling your book to Chegg. There are usually a few shops in town that buy textbooks, too. How necessary is it to keep college books in your major?

It's much easier financially to rent books, or sell them back. My majors are Psychology and EnglishHow necessary is it to keep college books in your major?
It depends. Whenever you're thinking about selling/keeping something, you need to ask yourself "am I going to need this in my future". If so, "what am I going to use it for". Being that you're given so many textbooks in college, it can be difficult sorting out what you need and what's extra for your field.

Your first step to answering your question should be to ask yourself "how was this book used during my college career." Did your professor refer to the book often? Was the book helpful in explaining some difficult topics? Was this book easy to understand? All of these questions will help you in determining the correct decision.

Secondly, as mentioned previously, you should ask yourself "how am I going to use this in my future." Is this book going to be used for reference? Or, am I never going to open this book again? This can be difficult for both psychology and english majors.

As an education major, I keep all of my books while the majority of my colleagues sell them back to the bookstore. My philosophy is, "obviously the professor assigned this book for a reason. There has to be some reason why I need to keep it". Plus, I think for both psychology and education, textbooks come in handy when you need to find quick diagnoses. Determine how specific the book is for your needs.

As an english concentration, I can tell you that half of my textbooks, I'm never going to look at again. But, I love to read. So, I keep them in the hopes of getting an opportunity to read them again in my future. That's another thing to take into consideration. Obviously you chose these majors for a reason. Hopefully, that is because you have a passion for both subjects :). If the books give you pleasure, keep them.

Last but not least, you should evaluate your financial status. What does renting or selling these books gain, financially? If you really need the money, sell them. If not, why not keep them. Also take into consideration that you can write down all the book names and buy them on Amazon or Ebay for extremely low prices somewhere in your future.

Point is, there is no set rule when it comes to "necessity," unless your books are field specific. For example a book on lesson planning when you want to be a teacher. You decide what's important and what's not.

    Hope this helps
Sam :)How necessary is it to keep college books in your major?
I highly doubt you'll need them, though of course it's possible. You may want to hang on to upper level texts if you're considering grad school. I've looked at some of my books a couple times, and there have been a few I sold back that I wish I had kept, but generally I haven't needed them.

Keep in mind that you'll likely be able to find the information you may need from the books elsewhere - keeping the books just makes it easier to find it quickly. How necessary is it to keep college books in your major?

When do you buy college text books?

I am currently registered for a community college but I have not gotten any information on the books. I was wondering if they tell you what books to buy on the first day or do I have to find out myself what book I will need for the class? Thanks in advance. When do you buy college text books?
There should be a bookstore to buy your books at. Talk to the school and figure out which bookstore it is.

Then go and buy your books! The bookstore should know which ones you need.

about $20 per book sounds about right, from my experience. It's a total ripoff. I'd recommend selling them directly to other students if they're in good condition. What are recommended books for college students looking for a job?

I'm a 23-year-old college senior double-majoring in Psych and Social Work. I have one more semester of classes before my intership in social work. I'm also looking for a job this summer to boost my resume. Since I've got a little bit of free time before that starts, I plan to read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. What other books are recommended before starting a career?

Thanks! What are recommended books for college students looking for a job?
I'll be graduating soon too. My mom bought me these:

"The Pathfinder: How to Choose or Change Your Career for a Lifetime of Satisfaction and Success" by Nicholas Lore

"The Career Guide for Creative and Unconventional People" by Carol Eikleberry

"Do What you Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type" by Paul D. Tieger and Barbara Barron.

    Congrats! and good luck!!

oh! I would also recommend "The Happiness Hypothesis" by Jonathan Haidt. It will help you with life, not finding a job. It is the greatest book I've ever read. My social psych professor assigned it. I've recommended it to everyone and everyone who has read it has loved it so far :)

  • What kind of money can I get to pay for my college books?

I have plans on going to Tulane University my dad works their so I get to go for free. Does anyone know if I would have to apply? or get accepted?

Do they have any sort of help that pays for books?

I am a Junior in High school and i am trying to prepare as much as I can.

Any advice? What kind of money can I get to pay for my college books?
Yes, you will still have to apply and be accepted. That would be awesome if you can get through school without debt from tuition! Books average about $100/class (sometimes more, sometimes less). By working and saving, you could pay out of pocket. You could work just summers (full-time) and save all you can. If you get even a $500 scholarship each year that money could go towards your books. In addition, if you fill out your fafsa, you may qualify for state or federal aid to use for books, and if not, you'll qualify for federal student loan. If you use a loan, only use what is needed for books to avoid huge debt when you leave school. Congrats!

I want to go to college but books are too expensive?

I was looking into the college that is in my city and I wanted to enroll for 3 summer classes but the books for those classes all together will cost me almost $500.00. I can't afford that at all! Do you know if you can take a class without buying the books?I want to go to college but books are too expensive?
There are several things you can try: 1. look at the school library--most places keep a few copies of current texts in the lib; 2. buy a used copy--look at school bulletin boards--many students will unload their books cheaper than the bookstore; 3. try amazon.com for used books as well; 4. find a class buddy %26amp; share a book (I have done this many times)--you can xerox the critical areas. 5. Look at the course syllabus--see how much of the book you need to read anyway--then if its not alot you can xerox those parts. ANy number of these things have worked for me in the past.
uh im not sure. i say go talk to ur teachers/counselor and explain to/ask them. thats what i would doI want to go to college but books are too expensive?
Books are worth it!!! Trust me. In most cases you can sell them to other students for 75% of the cost (as long as it's lower than the cost of the bookstore). If you have to, take out a loan for a little more than you need to cover books and other expenses. DON'T LET BOOKS STOP YOU FROM GETTING AN EDUCATION!!

In most cases, books are necessary. They provide insight to the subject and possible homework help and explanations that your teacher can't always do. But ask the professor. Meet a friend in the class (or make a friend) and offer to share the costs of the books.
Find out if you can get the book used or at the library. Also try shopping online. If you know any one who took ask them how the teacher the books.I want to go to college but books are too expensive?
Make sure to check amazon or other book resellers on the net. DONT BUY FROM THE SCHOOL. My school wanted 95 bucks for one book I needed, and I found it for 3 dollars, used of course but in near perfect condition, at amazon. Like Jcann said, dont let books stop you!

Also, after you get the books, dont sell them back to the school either, they rip you off there too and flip it for a serious profit. Find out what they're selling them for and sell them direct to students who need them for half that.
Unfortunately there's very few courses that don't use the book if it's on the list for the class. Sharing with another student is a possibility, but it can also be difficult when it comes time to write a paper or study for finals.

For most of my college courses, I got the book lists as soon as they came out and then used the ISBN numbers to search second-hand websites such as half.com or amazon.com. Many times you can find your books at a much lower price than the bookstore offers them for. There are a couple things to watch out for are if you're ordering online: allow at least a week, if not two or more, for shipping and also, read the descriptions of the books being sold carefully to make sure you're getting the right edition.

If you're not interested in ordering online, another option would be to go to the campus and look for signs students may have posted to selling their books after the semester. We usually had several of them in our student center.
Try local used bookstores or Amazon.com (even eBay) for the books you need. You can even get lucky...I recently found the book for the college sign language class at a thrift shop for $1.....for the $65 book! Always check for the edition you need versus what an on-line used book seller is offering...if in doubt ask the seller before buying. I used to sell books on Amazon and once sold a retro text book, it was clothing design from the early 1970's. The person who purchased it expected to be able to use it in class in 2005 even though the year and edition were clearly stated.

When my son was in college I was so annoyed at the number of textbooks I purchased that they NEVER used in class. But sure as you think you can get away without a text you will need it.

Good luck! I hope you get a chance to persue this.
Make sure you have access to the course textbook unless the professor won't lecture from it and won't assign homework from it.

See if you can share with another student. Many schools also have a copy of course textbooks on reserve at their libraries, but keep in mind that other students will want to use the library copy as well.

Finally, the best option is to by a used copy online. Start with amazon.com, half. com, abebooks.com, alibris.com, and ebay.com. Do price comparisons

You can save money by buying books online but you must be sure you're buying the right book....I go online to the school bookstore and look at the books for that class. But if you do it this way, you have to pay out of pocket. Then when you get your financial aid refund of any left over from your school you can pay yourself back. The only way to not have to pay for them is to buy them from the book store, they can charge your account for themWhen do I start ordering books for college with financial aid?
Your campus bookstore will have the books you need. You will not have to "order" them ahead of time. You take your class schedule into the campus bookstore and the will make sure you get the right book. Most schools will allow you to return them within the first few days if you accidentally get the wrong book... just make sure you KEEP your receipt and keep the class schedule handy they will need to look at it again.

You can wait til classes start, I usually did. I headed to the bookstore IMMEDIATELY after my first day of classes but not any later. When do I start ordering books for college with financial aid?
When you have financial aid you have to order your books the first day the aid money is put into your account (usually the first day of school). Go to the on campus book store and ask someone to help you find your books...they usually know which books go with what course. Once you find the books you need for your courses write the names down on a piece of paper and order them online from Amazon (in the used book section)...it will save you hundreds of dollars. Be sure to do this the first day so you can have a heads up on the good deals.

Also if you order a book that is not needed, most colleges will give the student a refund within the first week of school. Some schools also have a book refund-return date.

    Hope this helps - peace.

Should i sell my college books or keep them?

I like all three of these books (Business law, Intro to Bus., and Personal Finance). But they are not from my major. I also need the money . And the longer i wait to decide, the less likely I will get much money for these books because the publishers always put out new revisions.

What should I do?Should i sell my college books or keep them?
As a person who kept many textbooks I never opened again, I would lean towards selling them. Unless you really think that you're going to use them significantly, you don't really need them. Much of the information in them can probably be found on the Internet or there's always the library or a bookstore to look stuff up. If you do sell them, try selling on a textbook website such as Amazon.com because you will get more money by selling directly to other students instead of to the bookstore.

If you're still feeling uncertain maybe you could keep the 1 or 2 best, and sell the other(s).
If you think you may use them again in the next couple of years, then keep them, but otherwise, sell them. You don't need the clutter.Should i sell my college books or keep them?
If they are not for your major - SELL THEM. You will most likely never use them again and they will just sit on a shelf and collect dust. The only possible reason to keep them is if you know an underclassman who will be taking the course in the future. Then you can personally sell your book to them and likely get more money than other sources.
I didn't keep a single book from college and I've never ever wished I had one. If you really need to look something up someday, there's the internet!Should i sell my college books or keep them?
If you don't absolutely need to sell them for the money, I would say keep them. You said you like them, and good, informative books are a treasure.
If you won't use them again then no.
keep them if you like them. If the book store buys them back, you more than likely won't get too much money for them, considering that if you ever want to have them again you're gonna pay so much more than what they bought them from you for. If you do decide that you really want to sell them, I would do it online, not at the school bookstore, cause it's just all around better that way, you may make more and whoever buys them won't have to pay as much as a bookstore. But if you do really like them, just keep em, books are awesome.
I only kept the books that were relevant to my major.

  • How much to save for kids college tuition/books/housing?

I'm wondering how much I should save to put my kid through a 4-year university. I want it to cover the full tuition, books, and housing. A college along the lines of USF (University of South Florida). Anyone with experience? Best way to save? How much to save for kids college tuition/books/housing?
I'm a USF alumni, and I strongly suggest that all college kids go to community college/JC for their first two years. It is a considerable cost savings in tuition, they can stay at home rather than pay for housing, and they can hold a part-time job. The first two years of college are basically the same whether at a university or a community college, so why not save the money. It will come in handy paying for books (which are absurdly expensive). It also gives them a chance to transition from the high school environment to the university environment.

By the way, you didn't say when your kid would be attending college. If you are looking a long way off, you need to factor in inflation. How much to save for kids college tuition/books/housing?
$ 36547.32.....the exact amount i summed up from all the papers. I sent my son to that college, the bast way is to look to save from the little things like things that wont make a difference in your life and you can live off, it might even be 12 cents, but after years trust me it will grow alot, try it out for 1 yearHow much to save for kids college tuition/books/housing?
Well let me inform you that the textbooks you'll need to get your child for college will be extremely expensive. Which is why I'd suggest to use http://www.bigwords.com. Because unlike most college bookstores they don't incorporate price comparison. Bigwords.com searches all the online textbook retailers and rental sites then compares all the lowest prices to find you the best deal. So if there's one thing I could help you out with when it comes to saving money, then its going to bigwords.com rent or buy your books. Hope this helps!

What are good college course books for Mandarin Chinese and Korean?

I'm looking for college level course books that teach Mandarin Chinese and Korean from beginner level past second year or so skill level. A series that covers all the basics of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

I've tried to find books that are on-par with a Japanese college course series called Genki which does the above for Japanese language, but any book store like Barnes and Noble or Borders has absolute GARBAGE when it comes to learning a language and nothing but speaking tapes and worthless "learn a language in 10 minutes" books.

I love answering kindle questions, it's by far one of my favorite devices that i keep in my bag.

For starters and most importantly I worn the Kindle 2 (soon to be upgrading to the Kindle DX), and it is easy for me to say I love it! I think I've read over 20 books so far.

There are other reviews on the Kindle 2 here:

    And for the Kindle DX:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?i鈥?/a>

I love my Kindle because it has helped me improve a lot on my efficiency and utilize my time. Before I owned the Kindle, waiting time like when I'm waiting for friends or waiting for shuttle bus or some thing like that is simply wasted. Now I just need to bring the Kindle 2 along with me. Another thing I like the most is the text-to-speech function, which means I can "read" books without even holding or looking at the Kindle. Now I like to use this function when I've myself busy on some boring things, say when I'm on the step machine or doing some housework...

I like reading and at the beginning I missed a bit on the feeling of reading books. But now I love to hold the Kindle, the e-ink seems to work very well, it is really like reading books... Now I often read with the Kindle for several hours but I don't feel tired.

I linked your directly to the Kindle Store on amazon.com! I really do hope you consider getting your own =)

It would help to know what you mean by "college level." If you mean academically written, then no. If you mean simply maturely written, with sound info, there are several:

All Your Worth by Elizabeth Warren

Your Money Rules for Financial Freedom by Michael J Laurence (few chapters all should read, but then it's primarily a reference book)

The Nine Steps to Financial Freedom Suze Orman

The Road to Wealth Suze Orman

The Laws of Money, the Lessons of Life by Suze Orman

I don't think you'd go wrong with any of those. Can anyone recommend any college level books on personal finance?
I took a personal finance class about 3 semesters ago and the book was called, Street Smarts, Book Smarts. It was the best academic book I've read because the author threw in personal stories but also has a lot of useful information in it. It also comes with a workbook to help you with the Time Value of Money.

Anywhere. Depends on how much you want to spend. If you want inexpensive, go to Ross, Marshalls, Forever 21...they always have cute ones. If you want to spend more money than try Macys, Nordstroms, etc. Also if you walk around the mall I'm sure you can find cute bags in any store

Try overstock.com, they have all kinds of name brand items (not sure if that really matters or not) that are marked down for cheap.
Go here, the bags are kind of expensive but they're durable and most of them are large. Also, the bags are being held my models so that can give you an idea of what size they are.

Where is the best place to sell my college books?

I know it cost almost a grand for books this semester and it looks like ill only get like 60$ back, these books were brought brand new and are in perfect condition. It looks like they will not even buy back half of them. Is there some really good website out there where I can sell my books?Where is the best place to sell my college books?
    Treetops...

This is the best textbook buyback program that i've seen:

    http://amzn.to/dDgTjA

Just enter your list of textbooks (isbn's, titles, authors), select ones you want to sell, send them in , spend your textbook money.

You should get a lot more than $60 back for your $1000 worth of textbooks.

    Good luck.
    I recommend Amazon.com

May not get the amount you paid, but you will get a decent amount back.Where is the best place to sell my college books?
Ebay, or post a local flier at your school, everyone always calls. People will be very willing just to pay 75% of the original cost. Ex. $200 book would sell for $150 and someone needs 5 books, they'd save $250; most people are willing to save.
I have used Amazon to sell books. It's a good place to sell because that is where so many people look to by books for school too. You need to keep in mind though that amazon does take a percentage of what you make.Where is the best place to sell my college books?
your best bet would be to post your book ads on as many classifieds sites as you can as it will increase your chances of selling them at a better price.

since you are from the US, you may post you book ads by clicking and selecting your state and city.

you may also try posting your ads on other classifieds sites such as olx, backpage, craigslist, etc

Is renting college books a good idea?

I'm starting regular college this year (i've done online college in the past)...but, i've noticed how expensive college books are. Would renting them be something you would reccomend? Why or why not?Is renting college books a good idea?
It depends. You have to search around. Sometimes you can find a used book in good condition that's cheaper than renting. Amazon.com is a good website for that.
I would recommend renting books. They're cheaper than buying new books, and are usually cheaper than buying used books. Stores pay hardly any money to buy the books back from you at the end of the year, and if a new addition of your book is being released at any time within the next year, they won't buy it at all. Renting is the way to go.Is renting college books a good idea?
I've never rented my books and probably never will. Books are expensive but you can normally find them cheap on sites like half.com, Ebay, or Amazon. I always buy my books from Amazon on an Amazon credit card which I use just for college books. They have a program called "book buy back" where at the end of the semester they will buy your books back and give you an Amazon gift card in exchange. If you use Amazon a lot then its a really good deal.

I wouldn't like renting books simply because you can't write in them (which I always do), you can't keep them if you find that they are useful for your major, and you have to have them back in by a certain date and sometimes that date is before your semester ends.
It depends on the book really. If it's books for your major, it would probably be best to buy them and keep them so your able to refer to them. But if it's like a freshman history class or something where you won't really need the book, then yes, it would be good to rent and save some $$$.Is renting college books a good idea?
No, it's still a waste of money. Go on Amazon or half.com, buy them used, then at the start of the next term, resell them on Amazon or half.com (try to keep the boxes they came in so you don't have to buy new boxes to ship them in). You get the option to keep them, and if you do resell them and you kept them in good condition, you can usually get most of you money back.

Textbook authors want to earn money for their work. See if your library bought any of the textbooks.

There are no free and legal sites with your textbooks online. Is there a website where I can read my college books for free?
textbooks are so expensive these days. Your best option will be to borrow from the library. Remember, it first come first serve. Another option would be to borrow from older students from the year before.Last option rent it or buy it used.

What is the name of the IRS form you need if you're a student who paid cash for college/books?

I paid cash for tuition and books, and I know there is a form that you can file to get some of that back, does anyone know what it's called? I thought it was 1098t but it is not.

Thanks! What is the name of the IRS form you need if you're a student who paid cash for college/books?
You can use whichever of these works out best:

8863 to get one of the available credits

8917 to take it as a deduction instead

If someone took you as a dependent and already filed, they get the credit/deduction. If they didn't take it they should amend. If nobody took you as a dependent this year/yet, you can take yourself and the credit/deduction if it works out best that way. Get forms at www.irs.gov

Amounts paid for tuition %26amp; fees (not books) by cash/credit card/loans qualify. What is the name of the IRS form you need if you're a student who paid cash for college/books?
According to IRS Publication 970, "Tax Benefits for Education," what you are seeking for is the Hope Credit.

And I quote, "Student-activity fees and expenses for course-related books, supplies, and equipment are included in qualified education expenses only if the fees and expenses must be paid to the institution as a condition of enrollment or attendance."

    Democrat '08!

Do you think its right for college books to cost more than tuition?

My tuition and fees cost 830 dollars this semester.

My books come out to 875 dollars.

I know you can get used ones, however, if the dang school would stop switching the books every semester I could find the used ones!

I just think its ludicrous a book would cost more.Do you think its right for college books to cost more than tuition?
That is ridiculous but most books costs around or over $100 a piece. If your tuition is low, then the cost of the books are still going to stay the same. I totally understand the "switching books" every semester thing. I hate it when I buy a brand new book for $120 and then can't sell it back because they aren't using that one anymore. WTF?! I always check to make sure I'm going to use the book before I even buy them. Sometimes, I'll spend all that money and not use the book!!!
College text books are really a modern day scam. They change editions simply to steal more money from students. One thing you can do is buy the book, scan or copy all the pages, then return it within the 100% refund period. You now have a copy of your textbook and all your money back.

Do you think its right for college books to cost more than tuition?
With books you are paying the author, the publisher, the printing office and the printing fees. The cost to produce a book is more than people seem to think. Professors change books so that they can be using the most current and best information to teach. You can rent books for a very small cost or you can buy them very cheaply on Amazon. Your tuition is really cheap, don;t blame that on the cost of books.Again, there are loads of places that you can rent books from, they save you loads of money.
I never thought that was possible. Where I go tuition is 31,400 and compared to that, 875 for books might not appear as bad as it is in your case. Nevertheless, I still think the prices are outrageous. You should never pay a full price for a textbook that you are going to use for only a semester or a year . Go to amazon.com, ebay, half.com and you will see a great amount of good deals on used books. I think you can bring that 875 dollars to around 500 or 600 if you do that. Some of the books there are in abundance and thats why usually the prices go down. Sometimes, you can buy 100-150 dollar books for 20-30-40 etc.Do you think its right for college books to cost more than tuition?
It depends where your going like I had this old book from Harvard, that a now, ex friend gave me, I looked for it's original cost online since it was from the late 1960's it was valued $500 to $2,000 online since it was something was originally used at Princeton, Harvard, and Brown back then. I know what you mean my books at local community college, cost just as much, but the text book companies need to pay people and so do the colleges, consider yoursleg lucky, you can go to a University or school like that and try your best and plan things out, and besides, you can always sell the ones you don't want.
No, I don't. Have you tried to get any used textbooks? They are cost effective. I do agree that switching of textbooks is an issue too. I feel your pain. I just completed my degree and my last book of 536 pages was $110 and I probably will not use it or refer to it again. This August I am taking my textbooks to a used textbook store to see how much I can get for the books. Any money from a used textbook is worth it.

    Blessings
    that is not right!

you need to take some action! maybe you could gather some friends and make a protest or write a letter to the headmaster? something ! that is way too much for books

    however....

you can go on websites like ebay or amazon and buy used copies of the books you will need the most likely will have them

    hoped i helped=)
They pay the authors to these textbooks hundreds of thousands of dollars to write the books. That's why they are so expensive. You must be going to a Community College, if you begin going to a University, your tuition will far exceed your textbooks.
what kind of school do you go to? it shouldnt be like that...i know, our books were expensive too but not as expensive as our tuitions...thats just ****** up! couldnt you just photocopy the pages of the book from some of your classmates...i think that would save a lot of money, dont you think?....unless your school doesnt allow that
Yeah I took two classes last semester during high school and I got free tuition but my Books were over 200 dollars and one of them wasn't even a book it was an envelope with an internet code. Try searching on ebay for the books you need.
    Books are rediculous...

My tuition is 22k a year for off campus and my books usually cost on average 500$..

The best thing to do is know your classes in advanced and go to half.com and buy them there...
    yeah, it sucks

but you can always sell yours when youre done with them

Where is the best place to sell your college books?

My school gives your basicly nothing for your books, so that really isnt a good option. What about half price books? Do they give good deals?Where is the best place to sell your college books?
You could try setting up a system like the one we have. At college we have a noticeboard. You can advertise the books you no longer need for whatever you want and the next lot of students (about to progress to their next year) can purchase them from you.
well honestly you could try a local used bookstore or MAYBE a librbary but to be honest although schools give you basically nothing for your books they usually pay more than any other place will because they actually want those kind of books because there is a high chance they will be resold. So I suggest craigslist.com (a free website where you can buy/advertise practically anything for free) or posting bulletins around your school and just selling the books to other students. because other places are usually hesitant to buy university books because most students will not buy their books there they buy them at school so for other businesses its almost a waste of money.Where is the best place to sell your college books?
I've been reselling mine on Amazon for the last two years. It's worked out well. You should be ready and able to ship your books out within 2 business days, but they defray part of your postage costs. They also charge a commission but it's not unreasonably high.

  • What happens if you don't have your college books on time?

I'm an incoming freshman and my financial aid money didn't come in. I found out that it won't be here until November. School starts in a week, but the books won't come in for a little over two weeks. Would there be a problem because of this? Does this happen a lot? Please help! What happens if you don't have your college books on time?
I agree with Liz. Often times I am late with my books because I order them from Amazon or Half.com because they are WAY too expensive in the campus bookstore. If you are in classes with 40 or less students then tell your professor up front that you are waiting on the books. They may let you use their copies or tell you to team up with someone else so you can complete the initial assignments.
No that doesn't happen a lot. Did you sign in order to defer some of your financial aid/grant money over so it could cover your textbooks cost? Contact the financial aid department.

Never happened to me.What happens if you don't have your college books on time?
Yep, I'm pretty sure this happens a lot. I'm an incoming freshman too. My books got lost in translation and now I have to wait 2 weeks for my books! I'm just glad my classes don't start until then.

The only problem that you will have is not going having your books the first few weeks. It's not like your professor is gonna call you out on it like you high school teacher would. You don't get a citation or anything, you probably will just be behind. That can be problematic in the long run.

    i hope this helps =]
No, your normally get money before school starts. And then (my school atleast) has like three weeks you can use your fin aid and well after that I do not know what happens. If you do not have the books you will miss a lot of information. You can photocopy from a classmates.....that is all I can suggest to you. What happens if you don't have your college books on time?
It never has happened to me but I am PSEO. Make friends that have the books or join a study group so you won't fall behind. Your school's library might have extra copies that you can borrow to do your homework.
I can't tell you if the financial aid not coming through is normal since that's never happened to me. But, I can say in regards to the books not being in that it's not that uncommon for people to not have books the first couple of days since most people order their books from Amazon since it's a lot cheaper than the campus bookstore.

Your professors will not expect you to have your books for the first day at least. And, they'll most likely be understanding when you tell them about your situation. They'll either let you borrow a copy of the books (if they have one), or you'll have to find someone in each of your classes to share with until your books come in.
I understand your situation. Financial Aid is a blessing and a pain in the neck. Since you have financial aid, you may qualify for a short term advance. Check out your school's financial aid website, or even give them a call.

Generally, you can ask for any amount up to the maximum (my university has a max amount of $600). If you are approved, the university will disburse the funds either to your bank account (probably where your fin aid is sent) or mail you a check. Processing time varies.

Is there time to get your college books after classes start, or should you always buy them before?

Just wondering because i was going to use my financial aid check to get the books, but we don't get them until after classes start....I was wondering if theres usually some times to get the books after the class starts? Is there time to get your college books after classes start, or should you always buy them before?
Yeah it's a good idea to wait anyway. Sometimes the books are listed as "required" in the book store but then you get the instructor's syllabus and the book isn't even on it. Just wait, find out which books you'll actually need and which ones you may be able to just borrow from the library (if you only have one assignment from it, for example.)Is there time to get your college books after classes start, or should you always buy them before?
Always wait until after the first class to buy textbooks.

Some times the book that is listed on the time of sign up is not the book the teacher ends up using. If this happens you might end up out of the 100-300 dollars you spent. If the teacher uses the textbook on the first day of class just get cozy with some one in class and share until you go out and get your own.

If you've read 'The Metamorphosis' by Kafka, you really should read 'The Trial,' Kafka's best work.

If you like Conrad, you'll probably like Robert Louis Stevenson as well, purely from the 'adventure yarns' aspect. For crisp writing like Conrad's, try some Ambrose Bierce and Ernest Hemingway as well.

Classics: You've read Homer; try Virgil's 'Aeneid,' Ovid's 'Metamorphoses,' if that wasn't what you read in the first point, some of Sappho's poems, Suetonius' histories (12 Caesars), and Juvenal's 'Satires.'What are some good college level books to read?
Jeez, why are you listening to your old man like that? Reading should be spontaneous and uncontrolled. You should be reading more of what you WANT to now, because later on you'll miss that chance you got to read whatever you wanted to, when you're told what to read in your free time for a grade. I don't know, kid, go hang out in the library and go find something you want to read. Maybe it'll give you a break from your dad, and maybe you can read something racy, like "Lolita" or "A Clockwork Orange". Fight the man, girl. What are some good college level books to read?

I don't know like what reasonable prices are for books and since I'm now paying for my own tuition unemployed with little savings I really need to buy them cheap. I buy mine on amazon used. Always double check that the edition is the same as the one the professor requires. You can expedite the shipping if you need to get the books in 1-2 days. Also check the buyer, whether they have expedited shipping available if necessary, and what kinds of ratings they've gotten.

For books you don't want to keep, you can rent books online. Chegg.com is one of those sites. I have had some friends who did it and recommended it, but I haven't personally tried it.

Frankly, Amazon is probably your best bet. You can usually get them on there for a decent discount new, and they also list used books from private sellers. And they give you a picture of the book so you can match the edition with the one your college is selling. I got a $150 text book on there for $17 a few months ago - fantastic condition. What is a good website to buy cheap college books? and fast!?
Best priced college books come from http://www.bookmallonline.com
Why don't you just rent your textbooks? You'll be saving more in the long run. I rent my books here: http://books.momlot.com

What I like about this service is that it cost less than $10 a month. The books are delivered to you and you can keep it as long as you want. Shipping's free both ways. And if you really want to keep the book, you can just buy them for cheap.

Don't get stressed out too much! Good luck!

Where would i be allowed to have a bake sale to pay for my college books?

so i'm a freshman at college and shocked at the price of books- 500 dollars for this semester!!!!

I have a job but I need cash, fast.

I love baking so i feel that i could host a bake sale.

but where could i do this? am i allowed to do it by supermarkets, like what can i do?

thanks!Where would i be allowed to have a bake sale to pay for my college books?
Supermarkets usually need you to provide some sort of non-profit statusbut you never know - it won't hurt to ask - talk to the manager. Check your local farmer's or flee markets. Some may have requirements such as providing tax ID or non-profit status as well but some smaller ones don't. It may cost a little for the space but if you're baking a lot of items and have a good turn-out, it will definately be worth your time. Another idea is talk to your resident advisor. If you have one, they might let you do something inside your dorm or common room and use all of your friends and neighbors to spread the word around campus like an "ice-cream social" type thing. If you don't have an RA and live on your own, host a "garage sale" type thing. Advertise on craigslist and any school or church boards you know of, and just have a full set up of all your baked goods. Maybe give small samples (cookie/brownie bites) and take orders for future as well - "make great birthday and holiday gifts for your friends and family".

Good luck!Where would i be allowed to have a bake sale to pay for my college books?
Supermarkets and so forth only give permission for bake sales that are fundraising for charity or for community organizations. They're not going to give permission to an individual trying to raise funds for personal expenses. Sorry.

Try offering to bake cookies or cupcakes for the other students in your dorm. You could take orders and deliver them on request.Where would i be allowed to have a bake sale to pay for my college books?
check with your health dept , in most states you CANT bake something in your home and bring it for resale for the public.there are some who pay for a license and get inspected in order to sell baked good out of there home.

What is the best website to buy books for college that are cheap?

Well I'm just trying to find a website that is reliable, and sells college level books at a cheap price. I tried amozon.com. I've heard of others but I don't recall the web address. Please help. thanks. What is the best website to buy books for college that are cheap?
www.half.com has by far the cheapest pricesWhat is the best website to buy books for college that are cheap?
    www.alfolo.com

How long does it take to receive college books ordered from websites like half.com?

And is this a good site to buy books from, what are your experiences from it, if you have bought books from it before.

I have a class that starts the 19th of this month and want to save some money on the book. About How long does it take to get the books you orderd? How long does it take to receive college books ordered from websites like half.com?
I went to the website and since it's an eBay website, it should be pretty safe. I'd double check though - call them, check their address, etc, so that you know who you're dealing with and if half.com is a genuine address.

I've found lots of textbooks on Amazon.com at decent prices. I'd highly recommend Amazon.

The shipping info on that website says that most books arrive in 2 -9 days after shipping. So probably you'd expect it in 2 weeks, since order processing takes a while. But the website also says that Media Mail shipments can take as long as 30 days to arrive, and as far as I know, Media Mail is the most commonly used method of sending things like textbooks (I could be wrong though).

The best thing to do is to email the seller and ask for an estimated delivery date.

Hope that helps. :)How long does it take to receive college books ordered from websites like half.com?
Beware! Feedback may be for him as a buyer, not seller. I bought from one w/100% positive, but as a buyer-"Quick pay" etc. As a seller they got my $$ via credit card in %26lt;24hr but took 2 wks just to drop my book in t/mail. Had to go to the bookstore and buy in time to do homework-stuck w/2 copies now

How long does it take to receive college books ordered from websites like half.com?
It depends on the individual seller. I've sold several books through half.com and the buyers all received their books in four days via media mail. I once ordered a book and paid extra for the expedited shipping, but it took a couple of weeks to get it because the seller only shipped once a week. Be sure to check the seller's rating, read some of the comments, and if possible, e-mail the seller to see how long it will take to get it in the mail. Of course, by the time you exchange e-mails, someone else may have bought the book.

It might be safer to buy from a "store" (high volume seller) on half.com because selling books is all they do, whereas an individual selling books is also a student and probably has a job, so it may not be possible for them to run to the post office to mail your book right away. I prefer to buy from individuals, though, because I like a clean text and the high volume sellers often just say they'll send you their best available copy, so you're never sure what you're going to get, whereas an individual seller knows exactly what condition his book is in. Be sure to check Amazon.com, too. At this time of year (beginning of the semester), most of the good, cheap copies at half.com are already gone so it's possible that you might be paying about the same, or even more, for a used copy at half.com than for a new copy at Amazon. Check ebay, too. You still have a couple of weeks, so you shouldn't have any problems getting your books on time. If anything goes wrong, you should be able to get your money back. I bought a lab book that was listed in excellent condition, but turned out it was missing a lot of pages. The seller refunded my money and even left a nice comment. Just be sure to read the sellers comments and communicate with the seller until you feel comfortable about your purchase.
