Why aren't most college books published by Thompson Learning?

I'm currently a college student and most of the upper division classes I have take don't use books published by Thompson Learning, despite Thompson having inexpensive online copies of books, and useful companion sites. Why don't most professors use Thompson? Why aren't most college books published by Thompson Learning?
The books aren't made for the 300, 400 level courses. Those books are written by scholars. Why aren't most college books published by Thompson Learning?
Have you noticed how many of your college textbooks are written by (or edited, contributed to, etc) the very professor you are taking the course from? This keeps them published succesfully, usually a requirement of their position, and allows them another source of (your) income.

Well for one thing, Thompson doesn't provide textbooks for every field. McGraw-Hill is excellent for math and science; Doubleday and Simonn and Schuster dominate the literature courses; NOLO dominates legal studies; HBJ and St. Martin's Press cover a wide range of topics.
