This semester, I bought all of my books off of ebay and half.com. I like buying through them because I often get my books 50% off of bookstore prices. This semester, all but one of my books were brand new. I bought a $160 biology book for $45 and a $130 Algebra book for $35. It definately could be worth a look!
A good tip, though, is to only buy books that have the buyer protection on them through Ebay because if they never send you the book after you have paid, ebay will reimburse you. Also, it only took my books around 3 or so days to arrive!!

Your college book store usually has new and used books at the same price you'll find anywhere else - you may be able to find slightly cheaper prices on specific books, but you have to be careful to find the right edition of the text.
You can search online at sites like Varsitybooks, Ebay, Craig's List, and so on, but your college bookstore isn't going to rip you off.

For more savings, get the book in paperback if it is available. While paperbacks are not as durable as hardbacks, some hardbacks suck and fall apart anyways.
Usually on textbookx or half, third party sellers (like small businesses or people selling the book) will sell the international edition of a book (make sure it is in English... they usually say it is, but contact the seller to make sure if you want). These are a lot cheaper and paperback from the ones I bought. Only problem is they have a different ISBN number, since it was produced in another country. So, selling it within the US is useless unless you do it online or informally.
your university book store or Amazon but make sure you get the correct edition that you need. For next semester, make friends with people taking the classes you will be signing up for and offer to pay them what the used book buyers are offering them. I saved a ton in Grad school doing this.
